Hi there,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop... Firstly I would like to know which laptop brands to look out for (top 3).
Basically need a reliable laptop and one that should last for a long time, I will be using it mostly for general things and nothing specific :)
I have been checking the HP dv6/dv7's and don't seem to bad, my budget is around 8k - 11k...

Advice will be appreciated!

Just to balance the advice - i have a DV6 - originally an 1150ei - haven't had a drop of trouble with it.
Just pay attention to what GPU(graphics) it has if you intend to be playing any games with it. - Anything with 1GB dedicated should be fine if you want to do some gaming with it.
I prefer myself to steer clear of AMD cpu's & NVIDIA graphics as they have previously caused excessive heat issues - something you don't really need to encourage with a laptop.
Ven i've not seen threads here on problems with DV6 series.........DV**** series yes but those are way older

Dell. Without a doubt.

Get a laptop with a 3 year next business day warranty. Dells are very reliable, and have excellent after-sales customer service and support. You won't regret it.

After Dell I'd recommend HP at a very close second. I would stay away from other lesser known brands, especially Asus, Toshiba. HP and Dell have a good presence in South Africa, as they service the business market. Getting spares, parts, repairs is not a problem, which is important if you are hoping to use your laptop in the long run.

Asus is NOT "a lesser known brand". When it comes to toughness and reliability it is the obvious choice. Acer and Dell do have great warranties and there Dell is the no-brainer with their 3 year ONSITE warranty. With Acer it is normally collect-and-repair, which can take up to a week.

Locally it is. They have a poor presence in RSA. Parts, spares and repairs are a problem. Sames goes for Toshiba, Lenovo and a few others. Acer have a good presence in RSA, but for the same price, Dell machines are more stylish, more reliable, and come with better warranties, and better turn-around times.

The Thinkpad line from Lenovo (formerly IBM) are rock solid and an excellent, since its a business orientated product line, obviously cant do games :p.
