I need to get a laptop cooler, my laptop has been overheating recently to the point where it keeps shutting down. I'll try clean the vents but am not sure if it will help.

Can anyone recommend a good laptop cooler? It's got to be fan assisted.

Usually cleaning the vents helps quite a lot. If your laptop is overheating after you've cleaned the vents, your laptop has some other issue which you will have to look into.

Logitech has some nice cooling pads, they are just a little expensive.

Your going around the problem - probably needs opening up & cleaning properly - take a looksee here http://www.insidemylaptop.com/category/cooling-fan/page/8/

Step one, clean laptop
Step two, raise the rear by 2cm as that allows air to flow much easier
Step three, check temps
If still not happy, expect a maximumum of 3-4° temp drop by purchasing a mid level cooler (they are all the same really). Top end coolers that will cost around R750 and up will get you 5-10°

As said above you're not fixing the problem, just trying to get rid of the symptoms. You really do need to open it up and clean out the fans, heatsinks etc or else your laptop is likely to die on you from the excessive heat.

I did open it up and clean it 6 months ago, but will do it again today. The thing is I've been doing a lot encoding and it burns my cpu at 100% when doing it, so I think it's best to get some assisted cooling.

I got cooler havent noticed much difference except that my laptop doesnt freeze anymore when gaming. Temperatures seem the same though and laptop fans make tons of noise. Laptop was cleaned thourougly and it didnt help also.

So if yours is freezing or slowing with games then you need it if not it wont help you to get one the changes are very minor from having the fan/cooler.

I have been using Targus X rack cooler for the last two years and have been very pleased with the job it does. It connects via a usb port on the laptop for ability to its two reversable fans but also includes two extra usb ports in it.

You need a better laptop for what you are doing...just cooling it will delay the inevitable.

Check your fan and heat-sink. If you are ripping put the laptop on a pedestal (give it 4 legs) and point a fan at it.

Got mine on a stand (need to use external KB). Raised like this, there's nothing slowing air down through vents.

Used for Folding too- one client running whenever I'm on AC. ~62C Vents need cleaning every few months (when gets loud or I can see dust build-up).
