Does anybody know how to setup a laptop with infrared to respond to signals from a TV remote.

I watch alot of avi's streamed off my laptop to the TV but have to get up to press play. It would be nice to program the laptop to respond to an extra TV remote I have.

The "PC remote control unit ... which one?" thread should provide you with the answers you are looking for. Although it's now quite dated, the information therein is still very much correct.

Anybody controlling Media player classic with a TV remote over IRDA port on laptop?
An IrDA port (as featured on many PC's) is not capable or receiving a signal from an infrared remote control.

Yes it can.

Probably a lot harder on Windows, but on Linux, provided you have a compatible IR receiver, you can install lirc, and configure it to do whatever you want quite easily.

It requires, however, that the IR remote and the receiver are actually ABLE to talk.

Meant to say. Cant be done on built in IRDA port of laptop and XP. i.e. as you say you will need extra hardware, so might as well get wifi usb stick (old laptop) for ipod etc control or usb remote, which seems likely to be the option to go for as was pointed out before this pointless endeavor...

I mean who actually ever used their IRDA port, what a gimmick ...

It's not a gimmick at all...

Contact the manufacturer of your notebook; chances are that they produce a remote for your machine, and it'll be quite reasonably priced.

The travel remote (that fits inside my PCMCIA port) for my Dell cost me only R35 from Dell.
