Looking for a decent, cheap laptop (around R5k maximum) to use for basic purposes such as Word, video chatting and viewing media.

Any suggestions?

I bought the Toshiba Satellite Core i3 notebook at CNA for R4799 & extremely happy with it.

The display is much better than I expected from such a cheapie! The bonus feature is that it comes with Windows 8 pre-installed, where most of the other cheapies still have Windows 7 basic pre-installed, so you'll have to spend an extra R1000.

The Lenovo Core i3 notebook goes for exactly the same price, but I really don't like the Lenovo's keyboard and trackpad.

*If you have a USB 3 drive, Windows 8 copies big files like the clappers! Perfect for my movie collection.

Lemme jump on here: client has a budget max R10K. They have been HP slaves for years but the latest machine hasn't exactly impressed them and build quality doesn't seem to be that good, after all. So now they're thinking DELL.

Recommendations? Also, where should I be shopping for it?

Well...it might sound stupid, but in the beginning when Lenovo came out, I thought it was a lot of junk...untill i read some reviews about it on the net. Its cheap and affordable...Google it...you might just be surprised.

AFAIK, Lenovo is the retail brand manufactured by IBM. Have nothing to back that up, but IBM is the world's largest computer manufactuer...? So it cant be a load of crap.

We have Lenovo laptops. Very nice imo. Have had only a battery issue, but it was almost permanently plugged in the wall socket. Otherwise no issues.

Hi There,
Lenovo is a good product as is Dell. Dell does offer a next business day fix for hardware issues countrywide and I believe that is something should factor in to the decision especially as the machine is for business use.

Regards

Tim

Sounds good, think I will take it if I don't see any better suggestions.

Just make sure about the Lenovo chicklet keyboard.

My neighbor bought the Lenovo i5 and she hates the keyboard, also says the spacebar get stuck sometime.

Can't go wrong with Dell, but the Toshiba hit the sweetspot for me. I'm extremely happy with it.

Well there is the Toshiba Satellite C850-F74T from Takealot but I can't seem to find any reviews about it.

Celeron with 2GB RAM and 320GB HDD for R4699 vs Core i3 with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD for R4799....I'd rather go with the Core i3.

That makes sense, but you give no laptop model or i3 model. Also I don't see it in the CNA online store. I will call the local CNA store to see if they have stock of it though.

Just ask for the Toshiba Satellite Core i3 notebook. ;)
