That page doesn't show dell first at all - shows them third. And it is not knowledge that is common to me. In researching this, I got various claims all putting dell third.
The link states:
2001,3,4,5,6 Dell is first...
After this, HP took the lead so yes i am wrong guess i zipped through that one a bit too quite... I guess with common knowledge its old common knowledge lol. Dell, once the worlds leading computer manufacturer somehow seems to ring a bell now
Any way,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell
Is a good read and proves that maybe my knowledge is not so great but here are some highlights:
"Dell surpassed Compaq to become the largest PC manufacturer in 1999. In 2002, when Compaq merged with Hewlett Packard (the 4th place PC maker), the combined Hewlett Packard took the top spot but struggled and Dell soon regained its lead."
"By the fourth quarter of 2006, Dell lost its title of the largest PC manufacturer to rival Hewlett Packard"
"In the shrinking PC industry, Dell continued to lose market share, as it dropped below Lenovo in 2011 to fall to number three in the world."
And moving on,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hewlett-Packard#The_2000s
" In 2012 it was the world's largest PC vendor by unit sales."
Back to the original point though... Maybe IBM was first in the 80's
