Laptop recommendation

Well I called 3 CNA stores closest to me. None of them have stock of this i3 Toshiba.

Stay away from anything that says "Celeron"....trust me...its a "downgrade" of an Intel cpu. What i mean by "downgrade", is it has very little "cache" (THRUST in laymen's terms)....although the SPEED...will be the same as of an equivalent "non"-Celeron ( Intel )...Intel still stays Intel :D

...some info about the Celeron

Looking for a decent, cheap laptop (around R5k maximum) to use for basic purposes such as Word, video chatting and viewing media.

Any suggestions?

Try Deon Wired for Fujitsu laptops. My wife has had an i3 from them for a while that I think was a pretty good deal compared to IC and the othe retailers. Only downside is that the audio is not brilliant but apart from that, great laptop.

Alternatively, the HP 4530/4540s laptops are pretty nice and have great speakers but cost about 6-7k for an i3

Although I had a Fujitsu notebook years ago & loved it, the current ones have horrible, washed out looking displays & bad performance.

And now the complication: the user does not want Windoze 8 - she wants 7, for whatever reason. I have more or less settled on the Dell Vostro 3460 i5-3210m but it ships 8. Can it go back to 7?

...only if you got the drivers for it ( and obviously, you must do a complete format )

So the performance isn't as good as Intel, but is it really noticeable for a user that needs only basic functions?

Can't you make it look like 7. That's after all what it's about - familiarity.

Hm... Why buy a windows 8 laptop and still fork out for a copy of windows 7 to downgrade to?

Check this one out:

They have it on special at the moment and it looks like quite a bargain... Seems like it comes with windows 7 basic, you could upgrade that much lesser fee compared to downgrading windows 8... With the extra money saved, you could get a nice wifi mouse, nice bag... Would more than likely come to less than 5k in any case.

With some tweaking you could easily bring back the start menu and remove the Metro tiles.

Now stop hijacking my thread - I need a laptop! :p

Windows 8.1 coming out on September 18... Was on News 24 i think, the start button comes back with that FREE update. Also, you can have it boot straight to the desktop like it used to be ;p

PS. Check my reply out on the other laptop thread, the SME one... Vostro 3xxx is awesome but for that price... You're looking at a Latitude and having seen both the Vostro and the Latitude in peices.... You get what you pay for with the latter!

Sorrie, ne. Should I break away in a new thread? Or maybe we should consolidate this one to find our best recommendations respectively.

Latitude lacks 3G integrated, does it not?

AFAIK, Lenovo is the retail brand manufactured by IBM. Have nothing to back that up, but IBM is the world's largest computer manufactuer...? So it cant be a load of crap.

Incorrect... It was 2nd in the 1990's?

Dell is with worlds largest computer manufacturer (still today) ;)

Depends on the model, some do have module support, others not... Yes they are slightly more expensive but really these days who uses an internal module? :S Tethering + USB modems... Owned it and much cheaper if you compare say a usb modem to a 3g module... Granted there is a quality difference in that the module supported laptops usually have antennas that are wired into the screen so its a big reception boost... However, does that really justify the price? If you live in the bushes yes, if not then you do not need it.

Its common knowledge, not an advertised gimmic by dell... In terms of volume of sales (market share) they are the largest manufacturer, yes...

I hate to quote wiki as i'd regard it as hearsay but as i said this is general knowledge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_share_of_personal_computer_vendors

That page doesn't show dell first at all - shows them third. And it is not knowledge that is common to me. In researching this, I got various claims all putting dell third.
