Looking for ultra portable windows based laptop. Max price R6k to replace a next book. Use is very light Web browsing and banking.

Your budget and request are incompatible I'm afraid. Ultra portable's are usually in the 13" range and start at around R13000+ for example: Asus UX330UA-FB257T zenbook which is about R14500 at present.

Otherwise you may have been using the term loosely. In that case you may want to consider: Asus T102HA-GR012T glacier - Silver+Grey highlight which goes for about R6500.

Alternatively you could lug around a Asus F541UA-GQ1608T - i3 (Dual core) at also about R6500.

Ah... ignore the last option as I see your requirement is in the 13" and below range.

I have an Acer Spin One which I got from Takelot for R4800. Add 4Gb of RAM and a 120 GB SSD and you are looking at about R6300. Plus you can earn eBucks on that.

It fits my needs pretty well, but one huge warning, the laptop does not take to being upgraded well. If you do go down that route, ask me for help before you order (or see the thread I created).

Other than that, it has a fantastic screen for its price range and is built well. Performance is fine, it has a touch screen, and can be folded in half to be used like a tablet. Performance will never be amazing but it suits my needs.

EDIT: It is 11.6 inches so nice and small. Long battery life too - the claim of 9 hours is no joke.

Thanks will look into these.
. It's for an oldish business man who doesn't really require performance it just has to have with a Windows platform for banking and be ultra portable.

He used the next book for around 3 years no with no real issue and that thing was a piece of crap

New X5 type CPU's are more powerful. Maybe he should look for the latest Atom based devices with eMMC.

Not sure he will tolerate Windows 10 behaviour though. Many do not.

His been using the next book and was happy with it

It was really a terrible machine expecially with the 32gb memory.

It was running windows 8 tho

Yeah that is the problem with machines that use eMMC storage - they usually only give you 32GB of it. Sometimes that is so little that you cannot update Windows.

OP - unfortunately our selection of laptops in SA is not great. But, I would have a look at TakeAlot and Incredible Connection - they have decent selections.

Get something with an 11.6 inch screen, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. If they had 64GB eMMC options available, those would work fine, but your best option is then a 500GB hard drive. Of course, even better than that is a 120GB SSD like I have, but then you have to upgrade the machine yourself.

Look at it there, don't buy it there.
