Hi, a friend asked me to have a look at a laptop for her to see what's wrong. The laptop seems to be working fine except for the screen which is extremely dim. So I think that it is the backlight that is blown. Is there anything else that could be the problem? It is a Compaq EvoN1050V

If the backlight is "blown", the screen will be unusable, except under direct light.

You can also have a look at the small (sometimes plastic, sometimes rubber) needle like button above your Function keys that switches off the backlight when you close the lid. It could be stuck or the switch under the pin malfunctioned.

Maybe not the backlight. The inverter could have failed. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Ev...tor&_osacat=0&bkBtn=&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313 and http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=AS0231653A3 . It opened the screen on that model, and with the aid of a multimeter I figured the fuse was gone. I bridged the fuse - and told the boss to buy the part or SMD fuse - and this got the screen running. I don't know what caused the fuse to blow, but I would suggest you spend the $15 shipped. If that don't work, then you may suspect the backlight.

This was the problem. The contact that senses that the laptop screen is closed was seized. So just took a tiny screwdriver and poked it and it's bright again :)
Gf is going to be impressed as the laptop has been sitting unused for over a year :) hehe..Thanks
