Largest websites in SA

DMMA aka the annoying spambot that keeps popping up in the bottom right hand corner.

How come the Banking websites are never on this list? Or the airport companies for bookings online?

The are not DMMA members, and therefore are not listed with Effective Measure.

Agreed.

So, the heading 'South Africa's Largest Websites' are incorrect. The stats are distorted and do not take into consideration other websites that may have a huge impact on the top sites mentioned by the DMMA.

I would strongly recommend that MyBB make a heading stating that this is only the DMMA's stats, which is not accurate. It should also clearly be mentioned that only a very, very small portion of SA websites are measured and it only applies to DMMA members and not the Internet as a whole.

This may be interesting reading for DMMA members but are very misleading to the public who has nothing to do with the DMMA and their members.

Alexa.com will probably be a better measure to indicate SA's top sites, however, even they are limited - http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/ZA

Yeah, the heading isn't exactly accurate is it? It should probably read along the lines of "Largest DMMA-affiliated websites in SA".

Interesting to note that there are around 400,000 unique international users to Mybroadband.co.za.

Yeah, from own experience with forums, about 300,000 of those visitors are spammers, website scrapers or bots. About 99,000 probably searched for something on the Internet and found a link here - clicked it and then closed the page.

A very small number will sign up and spam the forum. An even smaller amount may sign up and take part in a discussion then leave the forum never to return. You will be lucky if you get more than 10 a day that signs up and stays here permanently.

That number is skewed quite a bit by those just contributing to competition threads.

Wow, completely different picture.

Wow, completely different picture.

Yes, it is, and also more reliable.

They make use not only of their own technology, but also that of 3 other services in measuring traffic to basically all websites. There are still shortcomings there too, but I would much rather work on their stats. You do not need to be a member of their services to have your website tracked.

SA companies like the DMMA are still living in the 80's. They are still manipulating the web trying to make a quick buck. Unfortunately, there are just too many stupid companies and people falling for them at this time.

Thank you for this clarification. The results change quite dramatically once you check Alexa out.

You are unfortunately completely wrong on all these points. May I suggest that you read a bit about all these organisations, and then reassess your comments? A good starting point will be:

--Effective Measure uses strict cookie based measuring, which is widely seen as the most accurate in the industry. Competitors include Google Analytics and Nielsen Online.
--Alexa uses a panel (not tags in websites), and can only give a rough estimate of rank and traffic. Many articles online about this.
--The DMMA is not trying to make money from the Internet. It is a non-profit industry body.

The simple truth: Effective Measure is currently the most accurate measure of website traffic in South Africa. The only issue is that all sites are not running the tags.

No probs. Yes, when you get a company who monitor about 70 websites who pay them and they claim those 70 to be SA's biggest sites you should see red flags. These articles here on MyBB is misleading advertising propaganda, unless they start adding the facts to the articles. You will get a lot of people who do research for whatever purpose and these articles here on MyBB are misleading and providing false and inaccurate information.

Hey RPM

I get what you are saying, however, in order to be part of the DMMA's stats, you need to join them and there are fees to be paid. They have only a few websites they track, and they are mainly paying customers. Thousands of other websites are not even included in that stats, whether they add tags or not. They should first join the DMMA.

I do not have any problem with the technology used by either DMMA or Alexa. I do have a problem with the DMMA claiming their clients to be the biggest websites in the country, while they exclude tracking thousands of other websites.

I think it will be more appropriate stating clearly that it is the DMMA's biggest websites.

How come google is not in the list?
