Latency is up...

CVW, from what I've followed on this thread, it sounds like the setting affects all ports on a DSLAM (I have probably misinterpreted though), so you would probably have to demand that your ADSL line is put into another DSLAM with fast path setting enabled.

In case anyone is interested in the technical difference:

Interleave uses a buffer and adds additional "parity" data packets to the stream, interleaving it with the actual data stream. If a data packet is corrupted it "rebuilds" it using the parity data. This and the buffer adds the additional latency.

Thanks wamatt - so we need to write sw drivers to do this interleave-ing and let our super fast PC's do it instead of letting the modem/router do it. And then force Teklom to put faster processors into the dslams.
That does explain the 50ms addition. 25ms = your router doing it's thing, 25ms = dslam doing its thing.

Why don't they apply the interleaving only at sites that require it? This pursuit of uniformity is a bit harsh.

Fun Fun Fun.

CS Source

I spoke to a fellow CS player earlier and he conformed that the last few days his ping has jumped.
In the daytime the ping ranges between 200-230 on 196.2.128.100:27018, [Gamezone] Karoo CS:S Public.

I have seen my ping as low as 50 :) at times, so their is a marked increase in latency, especially in the day time.

I will see what the ping is like tonight and report back.

I'm on the Rondebosch exchange in Cape Town, and am getting "normal" sub 12-ms pings to most local servers on the SAIX backbone. Uunet still seems to be suffering though:

Sybawoods I think they haven't gotten around to "doing" your exchange yet. I'm in Muizenberg and they changed my connection at about 11:30 on Saturday evening.

I'd been reading this thread earlier in the day and checked my modem status which showed 2meg down, fast path on. At 11:30 I noticed the modem sync go off for a few seconds and then come back on. When I checked the modem status again it was at 640/384, interleave on.

My pings with my shaped DSL to saix used to be about the same as yours but now its:

Tracing route to saix.net [196.25.1.200]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 10 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 56 ms 57 ms 56 ms wbs-146-128-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.146.128.1]

3 58 ms 57 ms 56 ms 196.43.23.10
4 59 ms 59 ms 58 ms wblv-ip-essr-1-atm-2-0-0-2.telkom-ipnet.co.za [1
96.43.11.30]
5 59 ms 59 ms 61 ms wblv-ip-www-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.25.1.200]

Trace complete.

Mmm. Ain't the Fast / Interleaved setting done per port or something like that. Fast mode is the standard. Overseas Interleaved is only used if you are far from the exchange and are having problems. They also test this within 20 mins and if your ADSL works then, you can keep it this way. This also don't affect the other ppl in your area!

My ADSL was working fine before, except for the 3GB cap. Rule 1 in IT, don't phuck with something that works!

If only some1 was powerfull enough to do something about this...

hey guys

wen i spoke to the telkom guy first, i asked if they could do a port-by-port mode setting. It seemed like they could, but that they wouldnt as it was too much of a lass and that they would have to change it if the customers requirements changed so doesnt sound like theyre willing to do that :(
/me looks for a key to the exchange O.o

Spike

my ping is still unchanged and ultra-low as stated in previous posts.

Guess you should get the number of a techhie, preferably at installation stage. Then ask him to leave the setting on fast!!

Nothing a few bucks can't fix hey?

Yup, DSL 384. It was 1/2 of that a few weeks ago, +- 40ms average. That ping you pasted is 100% identical to mine. You sure that's yours?
oops....sorry...TTL is 100% the same.......time = +-265

howdy other pissed adsl members

im soo glad to hear that its not just me that is having this problem. i live here in Ladysmith. although its not pretoria it atleast enables me to be able to aim on a character online while playing cs:s with 50 ping average. but since last sunday my ping has gone up to 100 - 130 causing me to have to aim way infront of a person.. if i can remeber correctly my isdn ping was 120 in online gaming.... why the hell should i keep adsl if my ping is ganna stay like that.

man do i wish someone can knock some sense into tellscum

Hmm. Maybe a few bucks could persuade a techie in the Muizenberg area to set things right again. :D

Overseas..?

ok guys after having spoken to someone at telkom who's got a clue, here's whats going on:

The guy i spoke to is gonna do a little more digging and im gonna speak to him on wednesday again.

Telkom are going to be changing the sync ratio (to 640/384) on the DSLAM's nationwide. Every dslam in every exchange is gonna be changed. This is NOT whats causing the latency issue (obviously). The second major change that they are doing is chaning the Path Mode from Fast to Interleaved. This basically repackages the packets and does extra error checking. This (according to him) is what is introducing the extra latency (25ms+). They have no intention to roll back to Fast Path mode. Their reason for switching is better error-control for future ventures such as VoIP, etc. The dude also said that we can get low latency back by getting the Unshaped account but i dont see how this will work. It looks as if ISDN is the only feasible way to get decent latency if ure living in areas outside of Pretoria.

Anyway...

Spike

With regards to this "Interleaved" mode, what do other Telecommunications companies around the world use? Just about every international online game server you hop onto overseas has the majority of players with < 20ms pings. Correct me if I am wrong, but there's not much difference in your ping with connection speeds > DSL?

This is such a load of <insert word(s) of choice here>..

Service Providor?

Which Service Provider are all the people with problems using?

I ask this as two Counterstrike players I know that have this high ping of 130 plus, are both with SAIX (Telkom).
Not sure if their is a possible connection as I had a ping of 60 last night on the Karoo Public CS Source Server and I am not with SAIX(Telkom).
