LATENCY!!!

Sorry to say this, but having pings for the past month and half 200ms during the same hours that was described in this forum had to be part of some issue.Shows the same pattern as you guys.

I'm not sure how Telkom routes the exchanges at all (I'm learning as we go here), but I think the southern suburbs are linking to Barrack Street. If that is a central hub then perhaps the CBD, Foreshore, Atlantic Seaboard, etc are connecting there too. If the southern suburbs have the highest ADSL concentration then perhaps it's the routers at Barrack Street there that can't handle the load coming from these affected exchanges. These exchanges should be split up across several routers or new routers added.

So areas like the CBD might experience this sort of problem intermittently but the southern suburb exchanges are continuously hitting the congestion points every day.

a telkom technician called me now and i described my problem, he said he has dealt with 4 or so calls of this type today already... they are aware of the issue and it "should be sorted out soon hopefully" but its not his department so thats all he could tell me. bit vague but at least its a step forward.

Good Afternoon Everyone

After pushing for answers for the better part of 3 weeks we have now finally received confirmation that there is severe congestion on the infrastructure at the Rondebosch exchange which is affecting users in the Southern Suburbs area. Telkom have confirmed that they have given the necessary bandwidth upgrades to rectify this top priority, but have not committed to an ETA as yet.

I'm still waiting for clarity as to exactly how this impacts on the wider area, but it's my understanding that Rondebosch does host an ESR so it's my assumption that this is a concentration point for traffic from the surrounding exchanges.

Kind Regards
Will

Sounds like a Dilbert strip :-)

It's good to know they are aware and (claim to be) working on it, thanks for following up.

Thanks for all the hard work Will, some of us really do appreciate it :)

My speed is fine. Downloading at 300-400KBps. Still pinging at 200ms, though..

With the high latencies and jitter we experience, the speedtest.net download stats are junk - it takes too long to get up to speed. If you download large files, you should average more than that. Even with pings @200 ms I have managed to download a largish file at 6Mbps on my 10Mbps line - it was split in multiple download threads.

It's nearing the end of the month, people will want to finish their caps.

Thanks a stack for all your help Will, Gordon and co - can't imagine what trying to sort this our would be like without you guys. Telkom simply won't admit that there's anything wrong to their end-users. Cheers!

We have final confirmation from our Engineering team as well as Telkom that the Rondebosch exchange is congested. Other ISP’s have also mentioned this and is affected browsing around the Southern Suburbs.

Telkom have planned maintenance and the necessary bandwidth upgrades to the exchange to eliminate the congestion issues being experienced at the moment, unfortunately we have not yet been provided with an ETR on these upgrades.

To add to this, we have been and will continue to run significant network tweaks over the next two weeks to assist the issue, including expediting planned capacity upgrades - there is however no ETA on this as of yet.
We urge customers who are still experiencing poor browsing and latency issue to please send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

Client Code
ADSL Username
ADSL Password
A trace to mybroadband.co.za and one other slow website.

We will then process this information which will assist with the network tweaks as well as hopefully decrease the ETR on the Rondebosch exchange bandwidth upgrades.
