Hi Guys,

What are your opinions on these 2 TV deals being offered by FNB..

Is it worth it for the price?

How does the H5100 compare to the H6400?

Is the H6400 the one to go for?
I've read reviews indicating the black levels on the H6400 are really good.

Yep. I would want go game on it. 14k is a big stash of cash. Wondering if I should just wait for UHD tv's to drop in price and get one of those instead - if it would turn out to be more future proof - and considering HD has been around for such a long while already.

OK, just wait until next year, or the year after if looking for uhd at that price.

I remember the same argument from 720 > 1080
And DTS to DTS-HD Master

The thing is UHD will become mainstream just like the others - and the benefit of waiting is lower priced 1080 screens.

Which still applies if one sits outside the range where the difference is perceivable, regardless of what is available.

The point here is waiting or not. Your forecast would be at least 5+ years IMO. Probably not what the OP had in mind.
 
I'm not actually disagreeing with you though - I just think it'll move ahead to higher resolution regardless.
 
UHD is definitely the next step, but they won't be affordable for at least another 2-3 years in my opinion. The average consumer is happy with his 1080p and doesn't see the necessity to upgrade, stalling UHD uptake keeping prices high.

Marketing gimmick and ignorance, hand in hand.

I'm not denying that ultimately the consumer benefits - that much is a given - but as various techs become saturated/with little room for improvement, it becomes an issue to me.

I'd much rather they worked on improving LCD tech/full array LED tech/OLED. But as we know, it's a numbers game. The higher the better. That's what drives profits. 95% of buying power is more concerned about how high the Hz and dynamic contrast ratio go.

Hard being a purist/*phile.

Netflix: UHD TV still five years from the mainstream

If you haven't already rushed out and bought an ultra-high-definition television, don't panic.

According to Netflix, there's still plenty of time before they officially replace HD TV sets.

The format is growing in popularity and the price of sets is already starting to fall. NPD DisplaySearch's latest figures show that annual shipments of UHD TVs have already surpassed the 1 million mark (1.6 million TVs in 2013), and while demand for the sets is greatest in China (responsible for over 80% of the global market at the moment), interest and excitement is growing in the US and Europe, too.

A Strategy Analytics survey shows that almost two thirds of American consumers and half of Europeans are getting ready to buy their first UHD TV this year.

However, despite this growing interest, Netflix, the US-based online movie streaming company believes that the technology still has some way to go before it really does go mainstream.

Even though Netflixs is already making and broadcasting programs in 4K UHD resolution, the company has told Tech Radar that it will take another five years, i.e., until 2019, for the new format and TV sets to replace HD.

"Market researchers predict that consumers will buy a million Ultra HD 4K TVs this year and even more in subsequent years. We expect it will likely take up to 5 years before Ultra HD 4K becomes mainstream; when most of the TVs on store shelves are Ultra HD 4K," the company said.

Ultra-high definition televisions offer a pixel density and level of detail far greater than that of a high-definition television set. The TVs are sometimes referred to as 4K sets because they have four times as many pixels (i.e., 4000) horizontally than a HD TV.

TVs supporting the technology are already available from Samsung, LG and Sony, and smaller, cheaper brands, such as Polaroid are also entering the market. However, while prices are falling, there is still very little native ultra-high definition content out there for UHDTV owners to watch. — ©AFP/Relaxnews 2014

Can get a Samsung ua40h5100 for R5500. Opinions? Wasnt looking to buy at the moment but if its a very good deal ill jump.

Most notably, Samsung are putting Digital Terrestrial (DTT/DTV) tuners in their new TVs. No CI slot module though, but only MNET are broadcasting encrypted channels at the moment...

The SABC channels in 576i look amazing in digital, almost as good as an HD broadcast on DSTV! Will be nice to have some 1080i content on SABC HD. At the moment it is just a test loop.
