Non SMART = entry level.

SMART = mid/high end.

If you want a decent PQ (comparable to plasma as per OP) then one needs mid to high end LCD. Which by default comes with SMART.

So you don't get decent non-Smart TVs anymore? Pity.

...mmm...

That is an idea too. What's the issues with the Smart TV's? Do you know what operating system the Samsung runs on?

I think they use their own proprietary OS, but will be switching over to Tizen, AFAIK.

The apps are garbage. I don't know if it's any better on the latest models, but the ones I worked with (in the last year) are frustratingly bad.

So perhaps get a smart TV, but get a dedicated media player anyway. Best of both worlds. :p

I've got a Roku 3 and it's a brilliant little device.

For the Roku I have to set the DNS on the router right? Bleh.
Worse case scenario I would probably then just buy a second hand PS3. I love the quality of the streaming on it. No idea what the quality of the decoder is on the Roku. I have heard exceptional reviews on it though, loads of people on MyBB uses the Rokus. I just don't want to change the DNS on my router.

This guy found a workaround, and a couple more in the thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/541839-Roku-DNS-settings-solved

Might be a bit of schlep at first, but once it's set up should be fine.

Ooooo that isn't bad. Was budgeting sub R 10k though but 4k TV... mmm...

Yeah, could help with some future proofing. I also see PriceCheck has it starting at R15,247. So dunno if it's a mistake or what, but that looks like a damn good price.

@Pitbull: The Samsung H6400 48" is currently R10k at Dion Wired.

@Everyone else, I'm in a similar position to Pitbull, looking for a 48-50" Smart TV, budge around R10k.
I've done a fair amount of reading, and understand what most of the letters in the model numbers mean, but what on earth is the difference between an H6200, and H6400 and an H6203? The price can differ by up to R3k for the same size TV, which makes me wonder how to justify paying the extra?

H5500 = 5 Series (entry/mid range) with SMART, 60Hz, etc.

H6400 = 6 Series (mid-higher end) with SMART, 3D, 240Hz, micro dimming, etc.

Not that Hz means much, anyone in the know disables it and other motion enhancements, unless for gaming or cartoons. But yes, much better TV than the H5500.

If they add a number at the end like the 6203 it usually means it is watered down in some way, example the 6200 might have 2 USB ports and the 6203 only 1 or none. The 6400 on the other hand has the smart remote which makes everything 100x better.

+1, never been a fan of or advocated the strange numbers/diluted versions. Menus/settings abilities have even been different in the past.

Is it just me or is this a very good price for this model?

http://www.makro.co.za/electronics/samsung-50-127cm-uhd-smart-tv-282461EA

SAMSUNG
50" (127cm) UHD Smart TV
R12 999

3840 x 2160 and 200Hz...

The Samsung Concept store in clearwater also has it for the same price (Series 7). Dion Wired however has it for R1600 here: http://www.dionwired.co.za/televisions/samsung-50-ultra-hd-led-tv.html so i guess im getting it from Makro for that price then!

As long as it is not a Demo unit or something?

Go for it and let us know. :p

Just called Makro now (Strubens Valley) Apparently its on promotion for that price till the end of this week, the actual price is R16999 which it will go back to on Sunday 15th February, i also called the Samsung concept store, and the gentleman told me, they have the same TV, but for R11999 while stocks last (and they have 2 left).

So if i dont get it at Samsung the weekend, at least ill still save R4k if i get it at Makro.
