Hey all

Been following this thread for 2 months and it been helping a lot. I am gonna move into my new place end of February and I am busy stocking up the house for last 2 months with appliances and furniture. A TV is the last major thing I will buy. My budget is initially R5300 but if I can save on things like fridge, microwave, etc then I can add that towards TV budget.

I will be sitting about 3m - 3.3m from the TV. The room has some light early afternoon and evening but putting on dark curtains and tinting the windows. TV will mainly be used to watch sport in HD, some series and anime (all my anime are in HD) and the occasional gaming over weekend when I will hook up my PC to play my games in 1920 x 1080 resolution.

After weeks of trying to find TVs I am interested in same shop to view and compare I could only get the following to compare:

http://www.takealot.com/samsung-ua40eh5000r-40-inch-led-tv/PLID32848643

vs

http://www.takealot.com/hisense-40-inch-fhd-3d-led-tv/PLID28154511

There was also a 40" Sinotec next to them but was so poor in its enhanced settings that I didn't even bother adjusting it's settings.

It was a mission and salesman wasn't very helpful as they had to hook up the DSTV and move the TVs for me and get the remotes. Both were set very bright so I had both on normal mode and the brightness set to half of its settings. I changed channel to live cricket in HD. Samsung colours looked much more natural than the Hisense. The Hisense looked somewhat grainy and the colours not natural. The settings on remote were confusing and salesman inpatient so I rather just left it there.

I tried finding reviews for the following TVs but can't find any. Anybody have any experience with them and could advise?

And if I can save up a bit more:

Hope my input helped a bit and that someone can help me as well.

Howzit guys.

I am looking to buy another TV. Currently I have a 51" Samsung e550 plasma in my living room. I am busy creating a games room / "man cave". The TV for that room will primarily be used for gaming (Xbox One and Wii), watching downloaded content.

My living room TV is used for DSTV (HD), streaming (via Wifi), watching downloaded content.

My choices are either buying a TV for the games room or buying a TV for the living room and moving my plasma to the games room. Living room viewing distance is about 4-4,5m and the games room is about 3m.

Initial budget was R10-12k, but I guess I can stretch it a little bit to R13-14k.

I am a bit confused on which route to go. For the living room, I guess I will be looking at 55"+. For the games room a 46"+ should suffice.

I was initially looking at the 60" plasmas, but have issues with not enough HDMI cables and non-Smart features that I am using for streaming. I must add the living room is perfect for a plasma as there are not a lot of light. The games room is a bit more, but with the curtains closed the light will not be a problem.
Not sure if a 55" TV is a justifiable jump from a 51".

I recently had my 51-inch E550 warranty claimed and ended up going with the Samsung 48H6400 which is an LED.

Initially I was a bit worried that I made a terrible mistake as the TV seemed ridiculously small in comparison and also just didn't seem quite right colour wise and motion blur etc.

Once I spent a night or two with it I realised that it wasn't actually that much smaller for screen size but rather that the physical body is much smaller due to the bezel being much narrower. I opted for the downgrade because I changed mancaves recently and I was now sitting closer so the 51-inch was a bit overwhelming, but the 48-inch is now perfect for my needs.

After switching the Motion Plus crap off the screen is excellent for gaming and dare I say better than the Plasma ever was especially in daylight with the reflection always having been a problem on the E550. If you were rocking one of the higher end models with the anti glare filter I would have said stick to the E550 for gaming, but all things considered I can highly recommend the 6400.

So considering you say 46-inch should suffice you might well find the 48-inch is perfect for you as well and you can even save some money as it should be about 10k now.

Leave the Plasma in the lounge and put an LED in the mancave where you have a known light problem.

*****

The Smart TV is also much improved on the the H6400 over the old E550. My only issue being the Plex App that is pretty much the exact same low resolution mess it was before.

Keep the plasma in the living room and get a 60"+ for the games room
thats what I would do. Would just get an AV receiver for better sound and more hdmi inputs

That time again. I'm in the market for a Smart TV this time. No more plasmas to choose from so I'm left with these 2 options below. I'm not really in the need for 3D but one has 3D the other doesn't. Which one? I would rather go for the Samsung with no 3D as opposed to the LG which has. There is a 1" difference so it's very negligible.

Do you plan on watching Netflix, Hulu or any overseas streaming services?

Definitely. This is the reason for it needing to be a Smart TV.

Other TV is running off the PS3. But not going to buy another just to stream :D

Then you need to buy Samsung, LG has the region locked with no way of bypassing it, no manner of DNS or VPN can change it.

Get a non-Smart TV and buy a Roku/Chromecast/Raspberry Pi/Droid TV, rather. The apps on Smart TVs are awful.

Non SMART = entry level.

SMART = mid/high end.

If you want a decent PQ (comparable to plasma as per OP) then one needs mid to high end LCD. Which by default comes with SMART.

@ PP

Your thoughts on the H series Samsung interface i.e menu, colours etc?

I had the E series which was great. I recently bought the H6400 and am a bit disappointed. The interface is a bit more complicated, the colour scheme is terrible and you can't change the folder viewing options (DLNA server).

Not had much experience with Hxxx. Not really interested anymore now that plasma is no more. :(

...mmm...

That is an idea too. What's the issues with the Smart TV's? Do you know what operating system the Samsung runs on?
