Some feedback for those interested.

Bought the 48" full HD Samsung LED from Kalahari for 7499.

Delivered within 24 hours.

Loving the TV. No Smart features, but nice looking thing, very thin bezel. Not too big for the space.

The R500 voucher which was meant to be included with the deal has not yet reached me. But Kalahari is following up about that.

All in all, I'd recommend it.

So I finally set my 48H5100 up last night and watched Indy on Bluray. Very nice. Couple of things:

1. No CEC/ARC. Seriously. In 2014. So if you absolutely need that, look elsewhere. Apparently only Samsung Series 6 and up have CEC. That is retarded. My 5-year-old Sony had it. My receiver has an optical in, so I think I'll be okay, but I haven't tested it.

2. Running the AVForums 709 disc I can't quite get the white levels I'd want. That's contrast, I think. Or I'm not understanding the disc lekker.

3. The Game mode is freaking buried in the menu. Why?!

4. The LED Motion Plus thing is incredibly ***. So ***. Did their engineers really sit and think, "That's great, let's ship that as a feature!"?! Turn it off yesterday.

So that's based on half an hour of playing around and an hour of watching.

I'm enjoying mine so far.

Pity I didn't shell out the extra fro the smart version, but I'm happy with the rest of the features. No issues so far...

You won't understand if you're applying your own circumstances and needs. No one is advising anyone to buy one, merely challenging the statement "Please everyone just stay away from the H4000 Samsung" as that is completely based on various factors that may not apply to you, which I'll leave you to think about.

Lastly, I will repeat: Too often are we told that resolution is the be all and end all. TVs and smartphones alike. Merely generating hype so that those ignorant keep buying.
Just keep telling yourself that.
Resolution is probably the single most important spec for achieving 'life like' image. You might not realise the difference when viewing a display on its own but put two next to each other and you will definitely see it from typical viewing distances.
Maybe you watch your 32" 480p from 10m but rest of us are watching 50"+ from like 4m or 5m.

I think you are missing his point.
He is not saying resolution doesn't matter nor is he saying that it is a good tv.
Just that it has its place in the market. To those that place size above the "life like" image, or perhaps those who don't care for keeping up with the latest tech, or can't afford to.

Good day peoples of TV land on mybbland.

Could you kind folks please assist me with choosing a good TV per my limited budget?
By limited budget, I truly have to stress, it is limited. I don't have cash lying around and have to really stretch just to be able to afford a new set.

I've still got an old CRT, so this will be my first real actual normal TV by modern standards.

I've got a budget of about R3000 which I will stretch slightly above if need be.
I've got my eyes set on this unit from Kalahari currently: http://www.kalahari.com/Technology/...m=Referral&utm_campaign=FestivecatalogueNov14

Is that the best my money can afford? Or do you suggest I go for something else?

Thanks for any tips or guidance. :)

Makro has the PHillips 32" LED for R2499. If you can stretch and want a bit bigger, then they also have the Sinotec 40" for R3899. Alternatively Hirschs has the Samsung 4003 model for the same price. not sure of the differences. They also have the Hisense 40" LED for R4K. Or the LG IPS panel LED 32" for R3299.

LCD needs something to compete, and that is marketable to the masses, against plasma's superior motion handling.

Just keep telling yourself that.

Fixed this by setting the PS3 RGB output to Limited as opposed to Full/PC scale. Now I can get the correct black and white levels. Lekker.

So I might get slated for even asking this.
But how bad is the Samsung PS51F4000 really.
I know the resolution sucks.
I'm on a hunt for the biggest tv for R5k for my parents. Other than that it seems the Samsung 40H5100 is the other option.
I'm a little worried about light in the room, but I don't think it is a big enough factor to overlook the tv.
Only SD will be viewed on the tv for now, mostly sport with the occasional movie or series.
They not too big on quality.

I guess the right answer would be the 40" but I would think that a bigger screen would be more appropriate for the size of the room.

Any other suggestions welcome.

Most people are trained to think and say that you'd be mad (in terms of going plasma and such a low resolution), but there will be nothing wrong with it for your folks and their needs. If they sit far away it's a bonus, HD will still look good, if they get into it.

It's quite a large room. This is for the entertainment area. I don't think 40" would do it justice. Having said that there are budget constraints.

For myself I would not buy this tv, but my needs are different to theirs and I don't really think they would notice the difference. There is a patio door that worries me, but I think they putting a curtain over it.

I would go for the 51". I'm sure that if you take along some HD media, you'd be surprised.
