Obviously it's pentile as any review will mention, the question was interpreted as "Is pentile crap?" to which the answer is "No."

Certainly not a crap TV, suggest reading your review.

Whatever PP, any review that i read in English, German or Russian was saying the TV is crap. But for you if it has a Plasma sticker on it, it must be great. Seems to me that you could not understand the simple fact, that there are good plasma TVs and bad ones. Looks like you believe in this myth, that you have created for your self, that if it is a plasma by default it can not be bad. This one is very bad, very nasty and very cheap. I said long time ago, that i'm not going to argue with you. Not sure why i still carry on. Have fun.

Pentile

The main reason the H5000 is so inexpensive (for its size), is it uses a “pentile” pixel arrangement. Put simply, this means it has fewer red and blue sub-pixels than a “regular” 1080p TV. Here’s a closeup image of the pixel structure:

PenTile H5000

Note the RGBG arrangement of the subpixels, instead of the traditional RGB.

Sitting about 8 feet away, the only time I noticed any hint of this was certain thin solid colors on a black background. They had a bit more… let’s call it “crennelation” than I’d expect with a non-pentile display. I noticed a similar artifact with one of the Sharp Quattron TVs I reviewed.

Is PenTile a big deal? Nope. The overall image (as we’ll discuss) is so good, I think this is a non-issue. Is it likely the F8500, with it’s traditional sub-pixel layout (and full chroma resolution) seem a little more detailed? Maybe, but it’s going to be pretty slight.

If you sit abnormally close to your TV, maybe you might notice it more. But if that’s case, you might want to consider a 4K TV instead. Check out Chris Heinonen’s 4K calculator to see if 4K’s worth it for your room.

Picture Performance

Overall, the picture quality of the H5000 is excellent. A rich, contrasty, accurate, detailed image. Why did this technology disappear again? It’s not quite as excellent as the much more expensive F8500, but why would it be, since it’s a fraction of the price.

...

So this means the contrast ratio is somewhere between 6520 and 26,580:1. Even at the minimum, that’s better than the native contrast on pretty much any LCD (not counting good local dimming backlights). It’s not quite as good as the ZT60 or any OLED. Like most of the things about this TV, it’s “very good” and “excellent for the price.”

...

Color is quite accurate out of the box as well. The color management system isn’t quite as simple to use as some, but it does a reasonable job of letting a calibrator dial in the colors a bit more. Once I got the levels under the visible threshold, I stopped tweaking. There’s a fair amount of interaction in the controls, so adjusting luminance also moves hue and/or color. If you want to spend a few hours dialing them in by increments, you might be able to get them a little closer.

Input lag is a low 37.6ms, making this TV an excellent choice for gamers. This is lower than most TVs.

Given the price, size, and overall performance, I can’t think of anything that would prevent me from recommending it. Is it perfect? No, but what is?

Conclusion

The $1,300 64H5000 is a great TV, the last of its breed. It puts out a fantastic image, and is a great price too. We here at HDGuru are sad to see plasma go, but at least it leaves with its head held high, a classy exit of low price and high performance, its strengths for years.

We award the Samsung PN64H5000 four hearts, 4 out of 5

Get one while you still can, they’ll be gone in weeks, not months.

It's worth at least double that. The old R15,000 was a very good price.

Sadly you cannot get them anymore. Too late. :(

Tested this TV and returned it. While I was hooked on the coolness of curve, I found the LG 65UB950 better value for money. The LG does everything for me, including the ability to change service regions so that I could install US Netflix and Hulu Plus, UK BBC Iplayer and sports app. My roku 3 can now be moved to my bedroom. For me, LG UB950 = happiness!

Anybody else have issues registering the TV's MAC address on the Vox website?

Nope. Setting up the million free gigs was actually quick and painless. Not what I expected at all.

To anyone who is thinking of getting a tv grab this one. You won't regret it.

My MAC address also wasn't accepted, says I must contact support - which support? Vox or Samsung??? Did you solve the problem?

yep, email help@voxtelecom.co.za.

Explain what happened, and include:
Copy of ID
Copy of proof of purchase ( needs to confirm the date of purchase and that this was an Samsung TV that was purchased.
Photo of Mac address

Got sorted out within a day or two.

Has anyone tried to hook up the Samsung 50" UHD as a monitor yet?
I am keen to know how it will perform/what your comments might be.

Any kind of graphics card necessary, or will it just look like a normal HD monitor?

I have the 65" model, plugged my MacBook Air into it and could not get past 1080p over HDMI...
When I use a DisplayPort cable, my MacBook Air can drive a 2560x1440 Dell monitor in my office - but also only gets 1080p over HDMI to this screen.

So if you can advise what cable to use to get the resolution up, I will test it for you.

Video files on USB at 2160p are impressive.

So I finally found one at the old price (must be the last one in Gauteng).

Can anyone please advise on wall mounts (VESA 40cm I think).

I need something small and reasonable. I want the TV as close to the wall as possible, with just enough movement to get to the back to plug things in.

Went to look at the UA50HU7000 at House and Home at the Pavilion in Durbs - it looks really fantastic for the price. If only I had the money...
