LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

I'm looking for the Samsung UA46D6000. If anyone sees it going for R10k or less please give a shout out. Dion Wired had it for R10k two days ago but have increased the price to R12k again.

Game has it for R9999.
 
I'm in the market for a plasma TV, preferably a Samsung 43D450, but I will settle for a 42” LG or even 40” in the same quality/price range. Budget is tight and I'm shopping around. I want to know where I should look in Pretoria, currently looking at:

Game, Makro, Hirsh's, Hifi Corp, Metro Home Centre, New World, Dion Wired and Foto Digital.

Cheapest Samsung I can find at this moment is at Game, R4499.
Any places I'm missing?

Seems like a good enough price. Absolute minimum is R3,999 on the very occasional specials.

Was also looking at that one, but think I'm going with the LCD LA40D550 for R4,999.

If you tend to:

1) Have a bright room
2) Rely Full HD 1080p content
3) Rely less on SD content
4) Rely less on sport
5) Rely on PC monitor use
6) Sit closer than say, 2m

Then it's a good decision.

If you have a dimmer room, sit further than, say 2m, have less reliance on FHD, have reliance on SD and sport, then the plasma will provide superior motion handling, contrast, colours and picture quality.

Both are great TVs, it's down to what you intend using them for and in what environment.

Now you have put doubt in my mind again.

My needs justifies a plasma - lots of sports, more than 2m (almost 3m), mostly SD content and at most 720.

BUT my room is very bright. Especially sports on a Saturday morning.

How does the media players of the two compare? (PS43D452 vs LA40D550) Although I am going to use a separate HTPC (already ordered the HP Microserver) so can avoid this. Only 1 USB and 2 HDMI's on this plasma though...
 
I'm sure the black levels on that plasma are quite grey?

Although plasma fans love telling you that plasma screens have darker blacks, it's simply not true. The D550 black is quite grey ... and I'm sure that no different. Check them out yourself

Lies and Biaseness you know plasma is ultimate in black levels, you've got blinkers on ;-). The surprising thing is the D550 LCD actually has deeper blacks then the D550 plasma, but as soon as you show those websites to the plasma fanbois it's called bias cause they see it everyday with their TV.

Could you describe the brightness? Direct sun/light on the screen? Curtains? :-P

Might be able to get away with it if if there's not much direct light...

I take it other viewing times are mostly after hours.

North facing TV room with those old school beige blinds infront of a double glass sliding door. sun hits directly in on them. Curtains could be a solution. Might even help with the Stellenbosch heat in the summer.
