This year's E550 is exactly as reflective as 2011's D550. Not ideal for a very well lut room. I bought both plasmas. The more expensive sammy plasmas have an anti glare layer.

Are the current generation of plasmas still only suited for very low light environments? How do they handle reflection compared to some of the non-plasma screens currently on the market? For example, compared to the xxES6200 range?

Problem now is that all LCDs are glossy too... Nearly as bad as plasma.

If anybody is interested in the Samsung top of the range 46" LED, 46ES7500 new in the box for R12,999 please PM me. Including 2 year warranty. Cheapest price is R14,999 at Makro on special right now. I'm in Cape Town so it's probably only convenient if you are also.

@zeradius That looks like a good deal , just cant seem to find any reviews on that samsung perhaps Roman or postman pat could point us in the right direction

There is also a 40ES6200 for R7.7k , would that samsung be worth the extra cash ? compared to the 40EH6030 ?

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a plasma/LED screen to replace a projector setup in a projector room.

I am not very band conscious and since the room previously housed a projector it is reasonably dark.

What I am looking for is value for money, with Ideally the following:
* Large (I suppose 55" or more)
* Full HD
* Soft on the eyes
* 3D would be nice

I would appreciate any recommendations.

The es6200 is a smart TV.

afaik the 6030 is 3d and the 6200 is a smart tv. If you want both 3d and smart tv you need to go one up.

40" Full HD LCD (Samsung LED backlit LCD UA40EH5000/LG 42") vs 51" HD Ready plasma (Samsung PS51E450/LG).

LCD favours bright rooms with closer viewing distances (<2.5m). Better for rendering a full HD desktop/Blu-ray.

Plasma will outperform LCD in dimmer viewing conditions/night time viewing and will benefit longer viewing distance due to size. Lower res, but it's not a problem from distance. Lower res makes standard definition content look better. HD looks perfect from longer viewing distance.

If Full HD is a must or you sit close then you should take the LCD. If you sit further, your room isn't excessively bright during viewing times, and you are prepared to look past resolution, while getting better contrast/colours, you should go with plasma.

If going the LCD route, and you value good picture quality, I would recommend saving for Samsung 6 Series, like UA40EH6030 or US40ES6200.

Good price. I don't think things will get much cheaper than that.

UA40EH6030 is a 6 Series panel, no SMART, has thicker bezel, is LED back lit.

UA40ES6200 is a [possibly better] 6 Series panel, with SMART, thin bezel, LED edge lit.

Samsung PS60E550 60" FHD 3D plasma. Goes for around R16 -R18k. One down would be PS51E550 51" at R9k.

Branded 55" LCDs will be a lot more. And while some cheapies offer them a bit cheaper than the 60" plasma, you probably don't want this - https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B-p1UebHPgjETFl2YWtKR2xLY0k/edit?pli=1.

@postman which one has the better picture quality with sd and hd the UA40EH6030 or the UA40ES6200 ? motion handling ? and how would sport be on these HDTv's?

@awesum anything you don"t like about your UA40ES6200 ?

ES6200 should have better PQ. Motion handling probably similar, both are 100Hz. Sport will be good if you like having the motion enhancement options enabled. Personally I don't like it, makes the picture look too fake, too smooth. Prefer plasma for sport without motion enhancements.

I don't believe the xxES6200 has micro dimming. Did a comparison of the 6200 and 6600 on the Samsung website.

Had a look at Dion Wired today and seems like the reflection on the plasma (E550) is much worse than on the xxES6200 screens. Could make out quite a lot of detail in the reflection on the plasma, the LCD has a slightly matte finish so appeared less extreme.

@Awesum: How's your experience been with the 6200?
