LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

Just to report back .. and I don't know if it was a wise decision either. But spoke to the Dion Wired guy, they're out of stock but had the demo one. So I said, I still want it, so he said cool, they'll wrap it for me. And I said .. But then I want a discount something closer to R7k. And he checked with his manager and said fine. So, i'm picking it up tonight, for R7k. What do you think? Demo model, but no scratches on it, no box but all accessories and the full 2 year warranty. What you think??

depends
I was messing around with an LG plasma and went through the setting where you can check how long the tv has been on. It was on for +2500 hours. so lets say you watch TV everyday for 8 hours, that equals to a about a year of constant watching.
Id check if the samsung has something similar before making a decision.

Thanks, I'll do that.

I saw that the TV has a half life rating of 50,000 hours. The guy said it was on display since January.

Does the two year warranty make this a better or worse decision? I.e. will it be more likely to die in July 2015??

Do it... I left my box at the shop anyway, it wouldn't fit in my moderately sized sedan no matter how much we tried. My last TV packed up just outside of warranty so hopefully the fact that its been on for a while means you'll get a mid warranty replacement... probably flawed logic but that price is to good to give up

I know, right?!!? R7k?? .. The Game salesman wanted R11999 and he was like 5 shops away in the same mall.

That logic makes lots of sense to me ;-)

You should have offered R6500...That TV has probably been on torch mode 24/7 since they put it on display :p

So last update ... well, I hope last update. Picked up the tv on Friday ... R7k ... got the remote, power cable, 2 pairs of glasses and a manual, in espanol .... Did updates to the firmware and to the apps ..

Just to say thanks to Greybush ... the picture, as you said, is beautiful. The old sinotech plasma is what I could afford and in good light conditions (on the tv) the picture was clear and bright, but knowing it was a 2011 tv (with probably 2009 technology) the picture quality for SD and sport wasn't too bad ... This new one PN51E550, better brand, using newer video processing, and my SD sport is looking lovely! Plasma still the way to go Postman Pot

Thanks!

Esquire has the Sony KLD-40EX650 http://www.sony.co.za/product/kdl-40ex650 on special online only for R4999. Pricecheck.co.za has cheapest as R5807.

Seems like a good deal to me?

I bought one for me. I am not the happiest but don't feel my money was wasted.
I do not have the correct inputs (HD feed) so I could be wrong.
The Mede8er does not work directly on the TV, you need to remove pin13 -> FYI.

I'll be plugging in an Xbox via HDMI, and then either stream media from plex server via that, or via dlna on the tv itself, which it appears to support

Yip, it does support DLNA.
But I am not to sure that it does play all the formats.
Also it does not read my WD 2TB NTFS external. Even after firmware upgrade.

Got myself one yesterday, and it streamed fine from my Plex media server. Only issue I have is that fast forward doesn't work properly. Time shows correctly but the stream starts from the beginning again.

Other thing is that I found some settings as to what to display when radio is on, but I can't find where to select the radio anywhere...
