1. Pack up TV, and put the massive box into car.
2. Drive back to Game. convince them to give me my money back.
3. Use some of that money to fill my car with fuel, and drive to Joburg
4. Hope to God the special is still on, wasn't an error, and that they have stock.
5. Open wallet, and quickly remember I spent a lot of my money on fuel. need to keep some for the road back.
6. Settle for 32" Hisense TV.
7. Drive back to Cape Town.
8. ...
9. Profit!
 
Not worth the schlep to save a few pennies. And the reality is is that this TV is worth well over R10k when you take into account the value and picture quality.

Funny how in its decline, plasma is now the in thing.

My work here has paid off. Used to need a flame suit when ever mentioning plasma because it was a power hungry, dim and dying tech surpassed by LCD...

And I assure you, 5 Series PS51xxx FHD plasma has always been good - for at least 5 years back to the B model.
 
DAMN this is a fine TV.

I didn't really expect much with something like "2D to 3D" conversion... WOW was I wrong.
This thing can literally convert any 2D movie into 3D and does a really amazing Job!

I just played the real 3D version of Avatar...Now while everything works as planned, some of the scenes that Blur studios created (The Space Shuttle scenes in space) are not very 3D..
I tried the 2D version of avatar with samsung's 2D > 3D conversion and damn, it looks like the actual 3D version! The flat Blur studios scenes popped out better than the 3D MKV!
Bladdy hell, did not expect this. :eek:

Time to re-watch some old movies in 3D!! :D

Wow, now I'm tempted. If the PS51F5500 is still available, that is. But can it really consume 300W? (299W max according to Samsung).

I read the AVforums Review, does it have the image retention problems they experienced? Thought that image burn-in was a thing of the past.

Couldn't tell you about Image Retention at this stage, but the TV is really value for money, for what you get.

F4000 = R6000
F5500 = R9000

It's R3000 more but the stuff you get is worth it.

IR =/= burn-in. IR leads to burn in. The difference nowadays, is that the likelihood of it leading to burn-in is vastly reduced.

If you leave a static image displaying at high brightness/contrast for hours, you will get retention... But it's gone in a matter of seconds of switching channels. What would display, regularly, for such lengths of time?

And don't be scared away by wattage figures either. When you put it into Rands, it's a completely different story, maybe R20 - R50 per month above LCD?

And the point here is that you would be looking at a 46/50" 7 Series Samsung LCD to get close to the picture quality of the plasma, which will cost what, R15,000?

R6,000 difference divided by R50 per month, it would take 120 months for the extra energy usage to cost more than the LCD.
 
Also, even a 15K LCD won't compare equally... viewing angle for example, would still be sub par.

This model has a few tricks up it's sleeve to combat IR... it shifts the pixels every few minutes (although you won't notice it)
If you look very closely at the screen, you would also see some "pixel noise" - the pixels change color slightly. (You won't see this at all from 1 meter and further of course.)


Image Burn-in on plasma's don't really happen much today, it's a stigma Plasma has because of problems in the early models.
 
I couldn't make Makro Ottery yesterday and called today to see if I could get the PS51F5500 R8999 price but its a no go because it is still on special for R9999.

You still have 3 hours to do this.

Else go to Game ASAP and pick it up there.

You might get lucky, and save yourself R1000.

Phone 'em bra, there are three makro's very close to each other in cape town.

OR you could just go to GAME and pay even less - the guy I went to knew about the special and didn't even check, ask for proof, or even phone for stock checks - he just gave me a R2200 discount.

EDIT:

Just spoke to Montague Gardens, Sales rep called me back from earlier. The special will be running again, from the 15th till the 24th. (Don't quote him on that).

But I told him we wanted the TV today, so they made a plan. R8999
