You know PP i like this suggestion very much. As long as there's no need to subscribe to the HD package. Simple, elegant solution.

Pleasure.

No, there isn't. Besides the improved PQ over HDMI (because it's digital opposed to RCA being analogue), and the cabling convenience, you also gain the benefit of PVR, which would allow you to record one channel while watching another. You also have the upgrade path to HD, definitely worth it if you enjoy sport and movies.
 
Oi...looking to scratch an itch...

Have had my Panasonic Viera 42" plasma for a couple of years now, still doing great...but...thinking of maybe 46" or 51". Still a big fan of plasma, prefer it above LED/LCD (call it personal preference :)).

Max R10k spend.
Full HD.
Not too bothered with "Smart" functionality, although it would be a bonus (to occupy me for the first 2 days or so :p)

Any suggestions I can forward to Santa?

Now...also still use my trusty old SD PVR...guess it is time to upgrade that as well. Decoders OK these days? When I looked a while back everyone was bitching about how crap the HD hardware is vs the SD hardware (which is pretty ****ty to begin with...). Currently have a two channel setup - ONE to living room, TWO to braai room and main bedroom.

Any advice appreciated!

Just a note there is no HD package with DSTV, but there is a PVR one which you pay extra for this also includes xtraview functionality. So it's the other way around he won't get pvr functionality out the box, but more likely HD should work.

Samsung PS51F5500 51" FHD 3D SMART plasma, of course!

You could go with the previous generation HD PVR, but you will need another decoder (i.e. your existing one) for dual view functionality. Even with the latest HD decoder (Explora).

Yes, the PS51F5500 is the best option out there for 10k

I still believe the Panasonic's are better, but really hard to come by and very little support in SA..

There is new firmware out for the Samsung Es6200
Version 001020. I don't know what's new.

If not... Im looking for the best deal on a 32" or 40" Samsung Smart TV. Please can someone advise.

I've got my eye on either the Samsung UA55EH6030 (R10'999) or UA46F5000 (R6'999) from Makro. Apart from the obvious size difference, any opinions? Anything I should know?

I'm finding reviews difficult to locate (cue everyone linking at least 50)

Sure, unless you're willing to pay more for superior picture quality, and can stretch to R8,900 for the Samsung PS51F5500 51" FHD plasma.

The problem is, I have so much light in the lounge I could grow crops..
