Yip. Do factor in its increased reflectivity though, it won't be good for bright rooms with direct sunlight falling on the screen, if you'll be watching during those times. LCD is also reflective, but less so and it's brighter - detrimental to picture quality but necessary in bright environments.

Got the Samsung 48H6400 or something. It was on special for R10k in Canala Walk in Dion Wired I think (store special if I am not mistaken).
Then we got Game in Canala Walk to price match and they beat the other price so I think it was then R9700. With extended warranty of a few years came to just over R10k. I will have to doubly check the pricing but something like that.
Anyways, while I can say that I didn't want a smart tv for the wife, I can say this:
- expensive TVs are often smart TVs.
- they often have much higher refresh rates, not talking CMR, but standard refresh takes.
- the panels they use are better.
- the processor/hardware they use is much faster than budget smart TVs. We have a baby 32" JVC which takes forever to start up.
- they come with fancy features like Samsung ' s triple protector which is built in surge protection which is nice.
- Biggest factor for me. VOX have a special where you get 1TB of ADSL fatpipe data when you buy any smart Samsung TV. Online or retail. So that is worth R2500 according to Vox, website or so. You get 12 months to use it. It is faster than AH cause we stay in CPT surrounds where AH were having capacity issues.
- also found out that there was a special with the Springboks. So you send proof of payment to an email address and they couriered me a genuine Springbok jersey for free lol. If you go to promotions page on Samsung ZA we site you will find more info. The Springbok one ended in October but the ADSL one runs until next year Feb or so.
So, since Mr. Pot is in a mentoring mood today, I thought I might as well ask.
Considering one of these for a lounge setup next year. Can't go bigger than 50" due to the turning wall mount location I have in mind, and plasma is out since it is a bright room.
48", should be around 10 by the time I decide to buy (not including whatever promotions might be available).

Sony TVs excel at build quality, I'm a big fan of them. The last bastion of Japan. It's a pity they don't have much presence in SA. Not tried their SMART yet, but it looks good. Sony are less likely to poorly implement it like Samsung have been known to.
Closer to the time, the best advice is to go to a dedicated AV store which has a test room, and spend an hour playing with the Sony, Samsung and LG equivalents side by side. Take 3x flash drives with the same content. Start by taking them out of Dynamic/Demo/Torch mode, set them to Movie/Cinema mode and adjust brightness, contrast, backlight etc. from there.
I think you'll be happy either way, as it's a relatively small outlay for an entry-mid range TV which are usually all on par, you might feel the time isn't worth it, fussing so much over comparing. If you like Sony, you will be happy, I have no doubt.
Agreed on the lack of presence in the country, I've also always been a fan of them. But like you say, they aren't very commonplace so actually finding a specific model on demo is less than easy to do, perhaps you might be able to recommend some dedicated AV stores?
But you are right, the OS on the Sony TV's I've used have always been pretty easy to grasp and so on, unlike the few LG models I've played with.
On another note, do you think it might be possible that one would notice an effect on quality or congruence by using a certain brands' products together? ie that a Sony TV would more effectively mingle with a PS3 and Sony sound system (which I know to be of high quality in general, sound seems to be their specialty) than a competing brand might, or is that just marketing blah?

I'm not sure of specialist AV stores in PTA.
I think it's more the convenience and ease factor, I recall jargon like 'Bravia Connect' or similar where everything syncs/connects up easily, etc.
Understood. I know my current small Sony has a version of this, allows me to just turn on the PS3 and the TV comes on automatically, as well as controlling the PS3 with the TV remote. And no, I have not tried playing a game with the TV remote haha

More than likely because it's a demo model which has been set to Torch mode for months and not taken care of.
They can try enabling the 'scroller' to see if that removes the retention. If not, it's burn-in.
Rather look elsewhere and utilise your budget.
Torch mode: The way retail stores set TVs to maximum brightness to deceive the unknowing public into thinking that brightness is better. The main reason we have a generation who thinks LCD is better.
