LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

Very well said Roman. Something i wanted to do for a long time myself, but did no want to start an useless argument with someone like PP.

You just did. How is it a useless argument when there are people who agree that 1080p can be a gimmick? Are they are wrong? Can you not understand them and their subjective situations such as viewing distance? Of course they are not speaking for closer-up viewing, that much is a given, as well as not relevant to the point being made.

PP i don't want to be rude man, honestly i don't but you know jack s**t about visual technologies. Simply it is not just distance from the screen and resolution on the screen.

Yes I do. Of course it is not just distance from the screen and resolution, there's also size and vision. What else is there? Please be more specific.

And this is all that you know. You are not making any good to any one here on this forum by keep saying the same over and over. Peace.

No it's not. So I am not making good to people who resonate that they are happy with HDR palsma at their distance? Those interested in the PS51E450 at R4,999 who are unsure? Please then tell them why they should not get the TV.

Yes, they are watching non stop.

I'm also impressed with it, I have a 51d550 and I'm not sure if the extra money for the full hd is really worth it.

Is this forumite wrong?

I would take the 46" then due to the size difference since I am happy gaming at 60FPS. I think it will benefit you more especially for competitive gaming as well as a more enthralling experience overall, from that sort of viewing distance, than the PQ edge and 100Hz of the smaller UA406030. I must emphasise that people tend to wish they went bigger. You could measure out 4m from either TVs at the shop to see if you are comfortable, as you may not have preferance for a larger screen from viewing distance. Weigh up size vs PQ and 100Hz of the UA406030, maybe you are willing to sacrifice size for better motion. Also a 5 Series LCD TV is a helluva lot better than a common PC LCD, so I think you will be extremely happy and not in the slightest disappointed with the PQ of it.

Thanks very much this is what I was looking for!

You make your wife sit behind you? How did you get this right?

Lol, nothing sinister...
Johndoe1983 is correct.

I ended up getting the Samsung PS51E550 for R8699 @ Makro.
I couldn't get to Makro on time for the special on the 46 inch 3D LED for R6999 and after that weekend it went back to R8999!!

When comparing the Plasma & the LED in the shop the colours on the Plasma was so much richer.
So far I'm very happy with the purchase & that is without connecting it to the HD PVR I bought at the same time, SD PVR is doing fine!

Thanks

If you ever want to let go of that SD-PVR, let me know.

PP, as i said i'm not starting a debate with you. What matters is very simple panel type/manufacturer and software. Lots of companies are buying panels from the same manufacturer, but then the soft is what makes the difference. I have not seen any one in this forum to talk about this. Then what one should be concern buying a new TV is the brightness of the panel. Samsung/LG plasma very bad. Then black levels. Samsung/LG plasma that you telling everyone to buy has worse black levels then the average LCD. Then after those two you getting your contrast. Very important for your PQ. I have not seen you to advice anyone for the screen based on those things. Then of course you got something called color gamut. Do you know that Sony TN screen most of the time has a better color gamut then your LG/Samsung IPS screens. Do you know that small sizes Samsung panels up to 60" are much worst them Samsung 60"+ panels. But you still telling anyone to buy them. Do you know that NEC/Eizo one of the best professional monitors out there are using LG panels, but their monitors and TV screens are light years in front of LG. For the price of course. You know, it is not your fault unfortunately. Here you don't have access to different brands, models and all that you know is Samsung/LG. But at least get your self educated. No hard feelings. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Apologies to everyone else for the long post :(

Panel type is often discussed, S-PVA vs IPS etc. Brightness being important huh - it destroys PQ. Link to black levels worse than the average LCD (LOL hope they mention consistency). Link to Sony TN with better colours. All professional monitors, Dell, HP, NEC, Eizo use LG panels. Big whoop. In the meantime I'm writing off your post as complete nonsense, which it is.

Gotta agree with PP on this guys.

We all have experience with panels and can comment on good and bad experiences. Pp has quite a ton of experience of simple walk-in to shops and testing out panels, so do I. I dont mean to sound like a freak, but when I spot a shop selling plasma/led/LCD, I'm in there straight away. I've seen and tested these panels in every possible lighting effect, and there by I have bought the panels that stuck out as true performers - now remember, it is our opinion on what matters for the true experience in our books - roman and team might have a different view - that does not make us wrong, neither anyone else. It is a matter of expert opinion, and that's what counts.

Where I have to disagree with you is, no amount of walk-in experience will ever match that of owning a particular piece/type of kit i.e. having daily familiarity with it, learning all it ins & outs.

It is a matter of expert opinion, and that's what counts.
Define expert opinion, personally I attach a greater value of credible expertise to someone who actually owns the device/technology being provided opinion on.

PP, i'm not providing you with links man. If you are interested google it. Plenty of answers to your questions. From my previous experience with you, you don't care about the links that people are providing to you in any case. Nothing wrong, carry on with the knowledge that you got.

From curiosity, which panel for you is true performer? Personally, i don't think there is such a thing in SA, except 1-2 Sony models. I'm not counting Pioneers and Panasonic's that were available 5-6 years ago. Not sure if Sharp Elite is avail. locally. Have not seen it.

I'm familiar with Google, but please post links to both - it's only fair that you provide what you've described in your post. I'm interested and after all, we are foruming. :)

Particularly interested in your statement about black levels, so again, links will be appreciated so we are on the same page and all.

Just wondering, you do realise the complications of how black level is tested? For example that it doesn't account for black consistency.

guys I got to ask. At the moment I have 2 sony tv's, I have never had lg or samsung in my life. Now why are Sony so bloody expensive? I am looking at getting a 3D sony but holy cow so much for a 40ich 3D sony. Also nobody here recommend a sony? its always lg or sammy, is it because of the price?

I found the sony internet TV thing to be pathetic compared to Samsung smart TV. I prefer plasma and Sony don't make plasmas. Samsung does seem to have a lot more promos etc though.

Milking their fans from yesteryears. Sony is losing the TV battle. As much as I prefer Japs to Kors.

Bought myself a Samsung series 8 "Smart TV" since now have a fairly large living room. Astonishing picture, works well on YouTube and you can download apps from the Samsung Apps Store. I got it from a small shop called Ivans just off Cavendish Square in Claremont. They sent someone to set it up and it took him over an hour. I would not call it a bargain but it was streets ahead of any Sony and LG I looked at.
