I found the sony internet TV thing to be pathetic compared to Samsung smart TV. I prefer plasma and Sony don't make plasmas. Samsung does seem to have a lot more promos etc though.

I dont have adsl for it so I dont mind


Milking their fans from yesteryears. Sony is losing the TV battle. As much as I prefer Japs to Kors.

Is it still a good tv or should I look into sammy or lg

guys I got to ask. At the moment I have 2 sony tv's, I have never had lg or samsung in my life. Now why are Sony so bloody expensive? I am looking at getting a 3D sony but holy cow so much for a 40ich 3D sony.Also nobody here recommend a sony? its always lg or sammy, is it because of the price?

Sony is lagging, I'd personally not touch an active 3d set - LG are your best bet for passive 3D.

Sony Bravia just got best 3D LED TV award for 2012 from whathifi.com

They have Passive? I don't trust industry awards much tbh. Link would be good though ;)
I'll never buy a 3D set that uses active tech.

High end Active 3D TVs with refresh rates of 240Hz and higher have barely noticeable flickering compared to lower model 3D TVs that are less than 240Hz refresh rate like the E550 plasmas and LEDs below the ES7500. With 240Hz+ panels your 3D glasses are flashing twice as fast and it makes a big difference to eye comfort. Samsung like to confuse us with their nonsense CMR Hz instead of true refresh rate so don't

I only noticed this when I watched 3D on the ES7500 after watching 3D mostly on a D550 and E550 plasma. Even with bright light shining in the room the flickering wasn't annoying like with the other TVs. A few minutes of googling confirmed that for Active 3D 240Hz is the sweet spot. On a tight budget I can totally understand passive 3D making a convincing argument.

With passives you can also enjoy watching 3D with head at angles. There is just no comparison for comfort between active and passive 3D technology with passive much better regards to comfort and fatigue.

Yeah, and a cheap (sub 6k) LG doesn't suffer from flicker or require batteries and expensive glasses.

Sorry for the late reply. I have owned 3 plasma's - 42", 50" and 64" - and none have ever hassled me with "pause icon" image retention. Or screen burn. Or power consumption that brought the grid down.

The one thing that does hassle me is Romans inability to admit when he is wrong :)

I got 4 pairs free with my Samsung E8000 :) And I know not what this flickering is you speak of.......

I convey what my first hand experience shows me, however not sure if you understood the detail of the point I was making? Unfortunately it went right over the head of our dearest Mr. Pot, and as usual got twisted into something else.

To summarise, the discussion was about the suitability of plasma for PC use (at native 1080p res). My point was LCDs/LEDs were better because of the compromise one has to make with a plasma (at least Samsung's models).

To get the sharpest/clearest picture/text, the TV needs to run in 1:1 pixel mapping mode (just like a PC monitor), but on Samsung plasmas (haven't verified on LG, Pana) the Pixel Shift function under Burn Protection gets disabled in 1:1 mode (Picture Size=Screen Fit).

When configured as such, it only takes about 15min on a static image for my E550 to start showing IR on high contrast parts of the screen e.g. PS3's pause icon on black letterbox bar when watching Bluray.

I was referring more to the (wilful?) misconstruing of PP's viewing distance comment, but even I do not want to resurrect that little saga. No worries though, you are both headstrong and passionate about the respective technologies you endorse. I just happen to fall into the plasma camp. For compelling and legitimate reasons only of course ;)

But a question. This IR that you have noticed under these specific circumstances - how long does it last after you commence viewing once again?

Not sure, was too distracting to continue with it. Since its in the letterbox area, could be some time (remains black till end of movie)?

I put the TV into its wipe pattern (Scrolling under Burn Protection) for 10 min, after which the IR was gone and I could continue watching. Now when I have to pause a Bluray on the E550, I switch the TV back into 16:9 (P.SIZE on remote) to re-engage Pixel Shift while paused. Then switch back into Screen Fit to continue watching at best 1:1 fidelity.

Not something I have to concern myself with on my D6000 LED.

Ah. Let me see if I have this straight. After you left your plasma on pause for 15 minutes, you came back and noticed some image retention. Rather than see if it would disappear by starting your movie again, you went into a wipe pattern for 10 minutes rather than let the movie play for a minute or so. Because it was "far too distracting" in the "letterbox" area..... ::)

I hope you will understand a couple of things:

- you have lost all credibility with me
- I consider you somewhat disingenuous for using this bizarre episode of yours to try and convince others to purchase LCD and not plasma
- and that I will call you Sheldon from now on as you remind me of him (Big Bang Theory anyone :))
