Ah i been looking at that one, its R5699 currently but i was just worried about ther Hz being a problem.

I'm no expert, and I'm sure the videophiles will feel different, but I think the quality is great. Perhaps I should report back after the Stormers game this weekend ;)

I checked in store at makro and they are both very nice screens. I think i'd rather go sinotech due to 5yr gaurentee + wall bracket included

For anybody interested, further experiences with the LG 42LD460:

Plugged my external hard drive in via USB and the TV plays all movies without any problems, the interface is VERY nice, quality is great, considering the source.

Plugged my LG Home Theater in via HDMI cable and the SIMPLINK works perfectly - I can configure my TV to turn the Home Theater on and use its speakers (automatically turns the TV sprakers off).

This TV rocks!

I'm looking for a name-brand 50" Plasma Full-HD (not Sinotek etc.) in Cape Town for roughly R10 000.

Was looking at the 50" Samsung PS50C550 for R10k incl. vat from Frontosa but I hear it has judder issues, pity.

Are there any benefits to going for a Sony Bravia over a Samsung/LG?

Can anyone recommend any other models in this size/region?

Samsung has released their new range recently. There is a thread around here somewhere on them. Pricing also looks quite good. I would look for one of the newer 51" full HD models then ;)

+1

Although they aren't full HD? Not such a biggy though if your viewing distance is more than 2.5m and most content is <720p. :)

Hi everyone. I'm deciding if I should get a new TV, and was hoping that you guys can help me perhaps. I'm currently using a 32" LCD Series 3 Sammy for HDTV + SDTV and I'm a pretty avid XBOX gamer as well. I want to give the 32" to my parents and get something bigger for myself. I have the following deals in mind, please tell what you think:

R6999 PS50C430 Sammy (HD Ready Plasma) 50"
R7999 UA40C5000 (FHD LED) 40" + Blu-ray Player
I saw a 50" LG Plasma for R6999 in store as well. Not sure about model though.
Any other recommendations in the 8k class?

btw it's for my room and i'll be viewing from 2 - 3 meters.

Cheers.

Because you game, you might be happier with and LCD/LED. If you are already used to the quality of SDTV on LCD, then it won't bother you on another LCD. I would recommend the 50" Samsng, but give consideration to Hisense T28 LED (40") at R6499. If you can accept a little (temporary) image retention on Plasma after gaming, then go Plasma. The new Plasma's don't get burn-in, you can screen wipe to remove the IR. I have a 50" Samsung plasma, and it's brilliant. But there are other tings to consider - how bright is your room, viewing distance. But i sense you might be happier with the LED/LCD

Samsung PS50C430, no question! You'll have an exceptional gaming experience. Plasma is generally regarded as best for gaming because of lower input lag and faster response time than LCD. Not to mention better blacks and colours at the entry of the market. Any image retention goes in a few seconds after changing source/channel, in fact if you play games with a cinematics/cut scenes your chances of IR are low because the cinematics/cut scenes refresh the static images/HUDs. IR isn't something to be concerned about. :)

No just the diference between SD@720x576, HD@1280x720 & FullHD@1920x1080. Patently obvious to anyone with reasonable eyesight.

Compare the same content at 720p and 1080p and then we can talk reasonably. You cannot say "I watched x on HD DSTV 720p and compared to y on Blu-ray 1080p and I saw the difference between 720p and 1080p". I'm sure you understand why. :)

I do not doubt that you will tell a difference, just saying I think it's less than you think. You have a close viewing distance which does count in your favour. ;)

Easy just did it, forced PS3 to 720p and watched the same Blueray.

Even from 2m+ away on a 40' the difference is fidelty is easily noticable. The texture of surfaces is so much more detailed especially on close ups.

For example in a headshot scene in HD you can see any general imperfections on someones skin, in Full HD you can see the individual hair folicals on an unshaven face very clearly.

Got the 50" Plasma Sammy for R6699.. What a bargain!! Watching the rugby at the moment and it's fantastic.. Also got another HD PVR for R1299.
Must say I'm chuffed with my decision, played some COD earlier and it was awesome. Felt like I was holding that gun. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. This is something that I'm particularly interested in. I really think your eyesight plays a role. Remember those tests you need to do when you do your Learner's Licence test. Now I reckon that those who score higher would be able to more easily see the differences between 720p and 1080p on a 40inch+ at 2m+, while some may even be able to see the difference on a 32inch at 2m.

Well eye tests are done without glasses which would correct the poorer eyesight. Obviously not speaking for everyone though.

What baffles me is how many experts say they can't tell a difference, the difference is minimal, etc.
