I'm going to Game tomorrow morning to see if its on special.

It's not the 550, but 5003. I was there yesterday.

i noted that the 32'' D550 weighs 12kg. i now want to fit the lcd into the top section of my build in cupboard in the room. its got 4 plastic white holder the holds the board straight. do you guys think that the board will be able to hold that weight or will it bend it in the middle and come loose after time.

just want to check before i buy it.

D550 by a mile and a half

Reason behind this is media player (integrated) functionality...
I think the CX520 has 3d capability (stand to be corrected)... but not worth it in my opinion. Both panels are great, and very similar in over 95% of the features and capabilities.

Let me ask you this... You going to be running other Sony HTS's / PS3's / Bluray players / AV Receivers / Laptops across HDMI/Network?

I like to keep things standard, you got a sony LCD.... get yourself a sony hts/av receiver. People tend to complain when certain features dont work properly because of cross brand mixing. Try stick to what you have/prefer to build on. Brands dont keep other brands in mind regarding functionality of their products, but a samsung LCD/LED/Plasma is sure to fullfill all requirements advertised by other samsung products (same for sony). just my opinion

The LCD is heavy dude... When i had some handyman over to drill (yeah, I'm not much of a driller... ;-) ) He even needed help lifting the bugger to hang it on the wall... was crazy!

What do you mean by "4 plastic white holders"??? I don't follow.. Send pics

The 5003 is LED?

Are you sure you are not referring to the 503... which is the low end entry level (only 1 hdmi in) LCD. It's like the baby d550 if even. Same functionality, just a heavily scaled down/affordable version wrt inputs

Excellent comparison thanks. So far the plasma seems better to me but I'll take a look at the Led when I'm in store.

I hope a store with a dark/test room.

Test LCD vs plasma under shop lighting and 80% chance you will walk out with LCD.

R2995 at FDW...

I bought the last one yesterday. Had to go to the Irene branch for it. They wanted to charge me R3799 when I got there, but then I showed them their website. I see they've taken it off now. In fact all Samsung LCDs are off... Probably pushing that far superiour edge-LED tech now, lolz

503 then I guess. That's the one i'm talking about.

Lol, well I had to eat, was at menlyn, game was like close so why not tour and see what they think they should have on special ;)

I hate those diluted models. People get hoodwinked when they think it's the same 5 Series at a cheaper price.

I completely agree.. but let's be honest... people who have a AV receiver with 4 HDMI's in, and only require 1 hdmi in on LCD... it's not a bad 1.. afterall, it's identical to quality features of a D550, just lack on inputs

Agreed. If you have an AVR and a media player, diluted 5 Series is fine.

I still reckon Cats Digital is the shizzles.

Good point. Having read about the D6000 no one seems to be particularly impressed with it, so I'm crossing it off my list. I'm nearly sold on the PS51D550 but three issues concern me:

1. The reflectivity issue - I'm hoping it won't be a problem. I don't watch TV during the day much, and I can filter most direct light out with the thick curtains I have. I just got a little freaked out looking at this TV in Dion Wired (which was an exceptionally well lit store though): whenever the screen went black you could see absolutely everything behind it, none of the TV's nearby reflected as badly. Could this just be down to the extreme lighting of the store or is there always some level of reflection?

2. The TV's ability to scale SD content (since 90% of what I use my TV for is SD). According to this review here: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/samsung-ps51d550-201109221412.htm the SD performance is less than stellar. Currently I have a 32 inch Samsung LCD (I think it's a 5 series from last year) - it does reasonably well with SD content (but fast motion usually results in blurs) if it can perform better then I wouldn't mind.

3. The plasma burn-in/retention issue - Can anyone tell me how long the burn in lasts for - say you watch a 3 hour film with black borders, how long does it take to 'reset' itself? I've read a lot of forums online where people complain about this.

Of course, I don't know if I should wait 2 months for the new TV's to come out? I'm guessing they won't be anywhere near the current prices? Should I bother waiting?
