Just popped over onto the Leaf site and see that they have redesigned it. Nice look now.

Also saw that they are giving away what they term free "navigation software", though that's something of a misnomer. It's actually mapping software which downloads maps over your GPRS connection as needed, but it will plot routes for you with detailed driving instructions. It's more like having a map on your phone but means you don't have to carry books around and looks cool to use. It downloaded about 300k to plot routes to a couple of destinations between Randpark Ridge in Johannesburg and the city centre.

Check it out at http://www.leaf.co.za/Leaf+Products/Leaf+Locate/. Should work with any Windows Mobile phone.

Yes, I think there's no way to tie it to GPS - Leaf probably doesn't want to undermine the Navigon product.

I downloaded it this morning. The maps are pretty accurate and it gives good directions. My only problem is that it doesn't seem to support GPS via bluetooth...

After you pair your GPS receiver with your device you need to assing an out going com port. this the COM port you would specify in the Navigation application. i havent used that specific application so i cant help you there, i use handymap - they have a free trial download www.handymap.co.za

I downloaded it on my imate jamin (HTC Prophet) with wm6 but when I launch it It gave me this error message "Device is not a HTC application will stop" Can anybody help me with that
Tnx

I had the same problem on my Prophet (a second device). Could it be because it identifies the phone as being primarily from imate, even though it actually an HTC? Might need to contact Leaf support about this.

Hi All

I'm one of the Engineers, working for Leaf, that designed and worked on the Leaf Locate Mobile applications for our WM phones.

I'll try answer any questions that you may have.

With regards to GPS connectivity: The app has been designed without GPS functionality in order to keep it free for our customers. Leaf is absorbing the cost of the Mapping Data and due to licencing constraints we cannot, at this time, allow for GPS positioning. We are looking at resolving this but for the moment if we had to add this funtionality, we would have to charge subscription. Those of you using this already may see that it is designed in order to accomodate for this and the fact that we have a close partnership with Navteq means we will update the maps whenever a new set is released.

Regarding compatibility: We have released this application for our HTC Windows Mobile Mobile phones only. As mentioned before, this is because Leaf is absorbing all the costs in order to provide this free to our customers.

I'll be keeping track of this forum. Any questions or comments you have I'll try to answer as soon as possible. Feedback will be GREATLY appreciated. We are actively working on this line of products, so any suggestions you give now can be taken into consideration for our next release.

Thanks,
Greg

Welcome SupaSpud,

Awesome for leaf to have a rep on the forum.

Hi Supaspud

Agree, great to see someone from Leaf here. Just two questions:

- You used to support iMate phones, is there no way they can be added to the list of phones that can use the application since they are HTC hardware?

- Is there any way to print out the directions that the software gives?

Very nice software, btw, and I like the fact that the downloads don't seem to be very heavy.

Hi Guys

Unfortinately we are no longer supporting iMates as you know. Although the older ones are HTC hardware, iMate has been taken over by another company here in SA. And as much as we want the program to be used by everyone... thats not entirely feasible. BUT! Can I interest you in some of our new ones? :) hehe...

We have it in the plan to include messaging and transferring of directions. Printing is quite an interesting option. How would you suggest we print the directions? Bluetooth printer or transfer onto the PC and print? Also... what would you like to see printed? Just text directions or do you think a map is necessary at each turn?

Thanks for your positive feedback! We specifically chose to use vector based, server-side mapping for the reason of keeping the program small yet fast.

Cheers,
Greg

...any future plans for adding satelite maps?

It would be nice if you can integrate it to the contacts list: if you have Googlemaps installed you can select to view the contact's address via Googlemaps from the contact menu. it would be nice if this could do the same with my contacts

Hi

The satellite maps are in in the roadmap. Once again we're working on the finer details of licencing in order to keep the service as close to free as possible. So i can't unfortunately give you a time of when this'll be available.

Contact list: We're going to have a product meeting next week to finalise the 3rd release of Leaf Locate and this will be on the agenda. If everything goes according to plan you should see the second release very soon.

Also, any suggestions or features you guys want, now is the time to speak up! At the end of the week i'll be adding these suggestions to the list!

Cheers!

Of course you can interest me in a new device - I'm happy to test anything for free...;)

I think that transfer onto the PC would be the most immediate need, with maps only as an optional extra. They would be nice, but I suspect it would be more useful to be able to hve all your directions on just one page.

Haha... aren't we all!

Transfer to pc: We will have a way of doing this via email in the next release coming shortly. If you mail it to yourself or a friend you can then print it. We'll look at a direct transfer in release three.

Hi, for info, I loaded Leaf Locate onto my P3400 with WM5 and it is also working - very cool indeed! Wish they would however do at least a "you are approximately in this area" function - just to get going a little quicker? Or is it there and I am missing it? Will be loaiding it on to my wife's S710 this evening.

Slightly O/T

SupaSpud, when will we see the official WM6 release for the TyTN from Leaf Wireless? Its been overdue now for quite a while.

AND - for the P3300. Was told by someone at Leaf that it should be out in two weeks - three weeks ago!!!

Hello

This is also being investigated! And is on my list! I'm doing some R&D on using cellular tower positions to give an approximate location! Can't tell you when it'll be ready tho!
