Leap Motion

Any of you seen this thing?

Gonna be interesting to see how well MYO detects gestures - you'd think that by monitoring muscle activity the gesture-recognition success rate would be extremely high. That's the problem with Leap right now - my gestures are only recognized 60-70% of the time, which is extremely low. The success rate needs to be at 100% - because that's exactly the success rate of current input devices. As soon as a gesture needs to be repeated, the system becomes redundant and I no longer care to use it.

Yeah, I agree!

Hi Saor, Are you still selling your Leap Motion controller? I am interested in buying it. I live in Plumstead area. Let me know!

Bump.

So with everyone and his dog getting one for a giveaway price of R99 from IC. Lets share some cool stuff to use it for.

Orion looks pretty cool if you have a compatible VR set.

Seems like worth the risk at R100
After having already owned one - not again :). The way it half-works gets tiresome very quickly. It's nice for the 30% of the time when it does what you expect, but the tech just ain't there yet. It's a very clumsy device.

I've owned a Leap Motion since launch and up until Orion I never felt like it was even remotely close to what had been advertised.

I played the Blocks VR demo and it was probably the most immersive VR experience I've had and refreshingly accurate, pinching worked every time and giving a thumbs up only ever failed when I held my hand too close to the HMD.

I'm definitely going to be trying more LM/VR demos with Orion (since it's a driver upgrade, all existing apps should automatically benefit, in theory anyway). But I don't expect it to compete against using standard HIDs or the upcoming VR specific controllers.

On a side note, @saor I also own a Myo and had the same line of thinking as you, unfortunately it turned out to be a bigger disappointment than the LM. Generally was more accurate but simply just wasn't good enough to use.

Heh - was tempted to pre-order one too :). Did you ever use it for anything / what were you hoping to use it for?

One of my gripes with Leap (and Myo) is the marketing and promotional material looks so fantastic for these devices, but the actual experience is so far from it.

I ordered it after getting my Oculus DK2 in the hopes that it would be easy to integrate and blah blah, I also had visions of walking around the house being able to change the music at the wave of a hand.

Neither of those things happened. The extent of my Myo use has been:
- An app for my phone that makes the sound of a whip cracking when you wave your harm in the appropriate manner.
- Showing Kaiju Carnage to friends when they come over.

Yeah, they make everything look so damn good, it's all BS in the marketing material.

Ordered one with the April 1 Special from Incredible at R99

Hopefully I can pick it up tonight.

I bought it when it was released.

Fun to mess around with. Fruit Ninja worked well. Sold it shortly after.

Definitely worth R100 to play around with and try new tech.

How did I miss the special..
Anyways I got the device, loaded up the block demo and Lyria, and put on my DK1, it's pretty damn good, not perfect but it's getting there.

So I got mine yesterday ... 60 minutes and I'm bored ;)

But for R99.00 it's a cool party trick and I'm sure someone will develop some cool software shortly.
