This is my point with people saying Netflix is fine on AH in that they are the ones that are just happy to see a non-buffering pic on the screen. On my WD-Live player, I can see the quality setting if I hit the info button, on AH it would settle on 384-480p, IS would be 480-720p, normally 720p (4mb line).

I moved from AH 4mb home uncapped to Web Africa 10mb home uncapped. The difference is amazing! Not purely in terms of line speed, but stability as well. With AH, my 4mb line would buffer every 20 - 30 seconds and I would NEVER get anything higher than 480p quality, with WA, I don't buffer at all and I've never seen anything less than 720p... I would say for the past week I've used WA, I've been at 720p for maybe around 10 seconds in total, the rest of the time it's 1080p. I've managed to stream 1440k and 4k on Youtube as well! 1440k worked perfectly, but the 4k has to buffer for a bit (around 10 seconds) before it starts streaming properly.
As for latencies for gaming, WA has been superior on Diablo 3 compared to AH. With AH, if I was using teamspeak and gaming at the same time, every time I spoke, I would notice a spike in my latencies, but with WA, I've yet to see it

Also going to leave. Have 40Mbps VDSL with AH and my satisfaction has gone down the drain. Hulu/Netflix/You Tube buffering every 30 seconds D3 latency peaks up to 2000ms.
I mean this is a 40Mbps line after all. Now, how do they explain this.

I have to say that for the past 3 weeks Twitch has been a breeze on AH-Capped. Not sure if it will remain..

Yup, I'm on a 10mb line and also have netflix (US version) running on my WD player. In my experience, I would typically only get 384-480p streams with AH capped account. With testing on VOX (my current provider) and WA, quality was typically a bit higher, mainly 480p but would jump to 720p periodically.
On an aside, changing to the UK version of Netflix via Unotelly's dynamo setting made a huge difference to quality. Hitting 720-1080 streams easily which I would never get on the US version, regardless of which ISP I'm on. Content is a bit different but I prefer the UK version in any event

You keep saying that there is testing at afrihost. For the last 2 months my account has not gone over 2meg download on a 4 meg account except for a couple of hours when south africa is sleeping. Its TOTALLY unacceptable to shape the account to 2meg for 20 hours of the day. I recommended a lot of friends to your service because it was great. Now I feel like an ass**** for recommending any of them as they have all come back to me to ask whats up. I am totally dissapointed in what has happened with Afrihost and I am sure many will agree that your reputation has gone down the drain.

It costs more for capped bundles than business uncapped. A bit counter-intuitive to switch to capped, unless you can divulge some info we're not aware of.

Yes great logic, upgrade to a business account for home use, just so you can use your line. Fuk Afrihost.
The business accounts are unshaped 24/7 and don't throttle at any amount of usage. You get excellent value for money.

I never tried the UK one, but always got 720p on my 4mb line with the US version, 10mb should do 1080p fine, as you say, maybe it's where you are geographically?

Same thing. If you want to download a lot you need an unshaped, unthrottled account. It just so happens that they businesses need the same type of account so they called a business account.
Many things point to Afrihost leaning out and are getting ready for a take-over. Gian needs to get a healthy return on this ISP he's built after all. It would appear as if their shaping changes have massaged their IPC contention point and the next step might be their international transit if tonight is anything to go by?

Unshaped is only marketing talk. It will be shaped, even if just to manage the overload condition, but how they provision bandwidth to pools of users on these services is far more important. Capped >> Uncapped, but Afrihost/MTN don't have an end-end solution on the same level as IS for some time now.
