Leaving Afrihost. Where did everyone else go?

I still say it has something to do with living in a city.
I live in the sticks and have now been with AH for 6.5 months capped and they are absolutely brilliant, max 424+ KB/s 24/7, mainly P2P but also F1GP streaming plus other sports, brilliant HD (640/720) no problems. :)
I used to be with Mweb Premium uncapped and it sucked so bad, most P2P's averaged 10-20 KB/s :(

I have the 10m business uncapped with afrihost - while downloading is great streaming is terrible. I often can't stream from youtube without constant buffering - my web africa capped backup account however streams like a beast. Downside to web africa one is that during the day I get horrible download speeds - what to do?!

Download at night?

Webafrica Business?

Have decided to bite the bullet & leave AH, their draconian shaping has finally driven me over the edge & I'm no longer a happy customer. Since when is blanket shaping everyone no matter their usage fair????? Seriously PO'd about it. Anyway, looking into moving to webafrica & have checked their policies & spoken to some buddies who are with them, & their shaping is actually something I can live with, oh & the same package I'm on now with AH I can get R100 cheaper at WA, score!! Afrihost, you'll be seeing my cancellation on the 24th. Good luck to you guys

I've been with WA for a while now and they were great in the beginning. But at R 100 cheaper they have attracted a lot of people and they may not be able to handle it Their shaping policy is based on a 5 star system (1 star being the worst). The shaping has been getting worse every month... still better than AH though. I've been with them all .. mweb, OW, AH etc. Not sure where to go if WA becomes a problem

simple...shaping on a weekend?

Account Status: Cancellation Pending
Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P
Latest IP Address: 105.236.****

Oh I love how I predicted this would happen when everyone fled from Mweb.

Strange how the various ISP's start off with a big bang, and then die when hitting a peak.
Even more strange is the promises that are not kept, normally starting with their call centers, lying through their teeth, followed by few words from the CEO, telling us what a great ISP we belong to.
So what to do ? pick a ISP that does not promise you the world, the service is always crappy, you dont expect much, and you dont get much.Someone like Helkom, I always seem to end up with them no matter what.

Oh don't get me wrong.

I won't be leaving Mweb because of Mweb, I'm quite happy with their service, it's more if an admin matter.

If it's coming out of my own pocket I will be going on pure capped.

Mweb has been great since all the abusers left because of their policy changes.

I upgraded my account to Afrihost business for the last week. I have been testing it and am now ready to post my results.

Browsing torrents usenet all run brilliantly. Night and Day compared to home uncapped. The only problem is streaming is absolutely terrible. I have not tested netflix or hulu as I dont subscribe to them but Youtube and DSTV is not good. Constant buffering. DSTV has its moments but if you want to stream Youtube I am sad to say you should go elsewhere.

If you arent interested in streaming then its wonderful! Everything else flies as it should.

I have really enjoyed afrihost and am really upset about having to leave but I think I will be giving webafrica a call to sign up to their business package as of the 1st August.

Afriman, thanks for your prompt service. Much appreciated.

I can stream 1080p Youtube just fine on my 8Mbit AH Business account. Unotelly streams work fine too. Are you using Google's DNS settings?

seriously thinking of leaving AH, can anyone that is on the WA business uncapped ADSL tell me if there is any shaping, I download during the day and at night...my downloads per month average near the 600GB mark, streaming, games, HD movies, series, etc...
The WA rep said that there is shaping on the business account

really? Wow, so now I have to look elsewhere again LOL
I too wanted to move to a WA business account, but after reading their AUP, it sounds too much like mweb. Sticking with AH Business.

Unfortunately Afrihost international is bad on Business and capped. I've tested a local VPN service and international streaming and other protocols go from laggy, packet loss and poor throughput to just great. I think WA will see my business this month end unless someone can suggest whether the bolt-on can still be done on VOX or something similar with a quality international back haul?

You'll only see shaping on the business account if you download a lot during the day. If you keep your big downloads between 00:00 and 06:00 I doubt you'll see any shaping.

I'm on the Web Africa 10Meg Business if you have any questions.

All depends on how much you value international performance. Web Africa by far has the best international connectivity for streaming and gaming.

I recently moved over to web africa from Afrihost(both business). I just want to find out how many time you do gaming downloads during the day. I have no problem keeping p2p and the like to midnight hours, but steam and mmo downloads are a bit difficult to schedule during the evenings. This might mean a big download 3 or 5 days out of the month during the day.

Steam actually support scheduling of downloads...at least for auto-updating. Just check in (normal mode, not BPM) Steam --> Settings --> Downloads --> Download Restrictions.
