Just bought myself a Canon EOS 600D..

Great discounts with the 650D just being launched.

Great camera. Love it!

Looking for a lens to go with it, and ditching the included 18-55mm

Will use the lens mainly for traveling, and thus want something that covers a great zoom range..

Know all the pro's and con's that go with superzooms..

Still, I think the convenience will outweigh some of the negatives surrounding superzooms.

Any recommendations?

I've read great reviews (and some average ones) on the Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD...

Does anyone have experience with this lens?

Regards and thanks!

I generally use the 55-250mm canon IS that came with the 600d kit.

Yes, nice coverage, but you still will need to exchange lenses.

How do you find the quality of the in-box lenses?

sorry to ask, where did u buy from? everybody is telling me there out of stuck

I did Istanbul and s Germany with a Sigma 18-125mm. Much faster than lenses with the range you mentioned. The speed helps in places where you can't use flash.

@BigAl-sa

That is what I need to consider...

Will a zoom lens that cover a greater range be to much of a trade-off in the aperture department..?

My logic (and knowledge) tells me that it will make more sense to go with more lenses, which means better quality glass, greater aperture range, faster focus and and.

It is well-known knowledge that there isn't a lens that fits-all-situations... Before I've read the reviews on this one, mainly Techradar's reviews..

Leap of faith, or err on the save side???

I've got a Sigma 18-200 IS and I've been very happy with it.

Thanks Garreth. I've been looking at the newest variety of that lens also...

I think you guys set my mind on the right track..

My gut feeling tells met to buy a HIGH quality 18-85mm from Canon, which probably would be used for 95% of all photo's, and later on, get a average quality zoom from 105-300mm?

I have an 18-200 Tamron lens and I have to say that while the large range does make for a useful and versatile lens to have on your camera, I am slightly disappointed by the performance. It's large and bulky, and years of using my feet to zoom mean I rarely go to 200 anyway. It gets really shaky and a VR2 lens is a lotta cash.

Also, I'm a sucker for Macro photography and the 18-200 lens really struggles to focus at the short end, even in Macro mode. I end up stepping back, zooming in a bit (if the lens allows me to) and usually I have to crop the photo later anyway.

If you have several grand to dosh out on an authentic Canon superzoom with advanced Vibration reduction and a better F-stop then sure, buy one lens and do everything. But I would recommend maybe an 18-105 or 18-125. In fact, I am considering selling my 18-200 in favour of an 18-105 and a 24mm prime.

Try http://fotodiscountworld.co.za/ instead of .com
Alternatively try http://www.fotohifiworld.co.za/ - they also have physical stores, one is in Centurion.
My favourite online camera shop right now is www.orms.co.za - great specials and epic service.
Of course if I buy anything Nikon brand new, I'm going straight to Nikon House in Centurion because they rock.

Aah sorry, I meant Fotodiscountworld.co.za

I see the camera isn't on special anymore. Got it for below 6k with 18-55

Actually trying to save some doh that's why I considered it.

But there is nothing I hate more than slow AF.

Have a look at this. Great lens, according to reviews.

Agreed (I suspect you mean the 15-85)

I personally think the EF-S 15-85mm from Canon is an amazing walk-around general purpose lens with exceptional IQ. 15mm is also much wider than the 17/18mm that most super-zooms start at. Add the 70-300L to that and you will have exceptional quality for the whole range. The biggest shortfall of this kit would be the relatively small apertures available which could frustrate low light shooting. However with the ISO range of modern bodies this is becoming less of an issue.

The 18-55IS kit lens together with the 55-250IS is not a bad starting off setup - IMO the possible IQ would be slightly better than the Tamron 18-270 over the whole range at the expense of convenience. To get the just about the best currently available image quality while staying with zooms I would recommend upgrading to the EF-S 15-85 IS and the EF 70-300L IS which is not cheap. The older 17-85 is not a bad lens but I would not recommend buying it new - good copies are currently being sold on the used market for just over R2500.

Thanks to all!

Definitely came to the right place for advice.

@mikef - 17-85 was what I actually meant. Has USM and IS. Image stabilisation, not that important (certainly on that lens), but nice to have.

I would ideally like something for travelling (going to Spain in a month), which covers a(fairly) broad spectrum, and then a prime (http://www.sacamera.co.za/product/1011861/Canon_EF_50mm_f_1.4_USM/) lens for that special photo's.

I've upgraded from a SX20IS, so you see why I'm a bit spoilt in the telephoto zoom department.... :-)

But I agree.. will go for something middle of the road, for now, and let my feet do the zooming as some of you suggested...

As I see it. I won't find a lens that will meet all my needs. Best to start of with something (relatively affordable in a third-party lens) that I can use for a interim period, and add to that as needed and when one can afford it.

I've tried most of the superzoom lenses and been disappointed with image quality on every one I tried.

With my 600D I have a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VR on 95% of the time, if I need longer I have a Canon 55-250IS.

I have no problem printing at 20"x30" and could probably go much bigger but for the cost.

I just got a 20"x30" canvas back and the quality is stunning (it looks better than A3 size print did on a 450D with 18-55IS kit lens).
