So then you vote with your heart instead of your head? As more of these small parties start to get more seats in parliament, the more accountable the ruling party will be. So instead of voting for someone 'cos they will try and make a difference (whether they're whiny or asskissy or nutters makes little difference really) you go with the flow and give the party pissing you off even more power? Doesn't make sense to me.

I understand what you're saying, but voting for a whiny/asskissy/nutty party really makes no sense to me.

The only way there will be true multi-party politics in this country is once the ANC/COSATU/SACP alliance is split.

I think we're all agreed on this. A little real political competition would keep everyone focused and honest.

Why would someone keep voting in a party that refuses to actually improve everyone's lives in accordance to their very own promises? Under ANC rule, South Africa has become a corrupt crime capital of the world. People are dying faster from AIDS and are being infected with the HIV faster than anywhere else in the world. South Africa has a distinct 1st place of most rapes of children under 6.

Surely the people cannot possibly want this? Emotionally, the majority (and this is understandable), never want to be oppressed by white rulers ever again. Nor do I. The ANC (every election this is done) promises that this will never happen as long as the vote is kept where it is. So the appeal being made is an emotional one, and the use of highly emotive language running up to and during elections is nothing more than propaganda designed to appeal on that level.

Why is it, if this is not an emotional issue but one where commonsense is applied, that the only people trying to hold the government accountable is basically the opposition and a small minority?

If you have a chance, have a gander at the friends of JZ website, and read how the emotions of the people enter the fray.
Another, more final point, is that the ANC demands of it's people to do things in accordance with the organization's alignment. A case in point: the controversial Civil Union Bill was passed in parliament recently, the ANC instructed all ANC MPs to be present and vote for the bill. It was an instruction and no one was allowed to vote otherwise.

Well said.

If I was back in SA, I would vote for you Jonty.

Would my vote work, probably not. The millions upon millions of poor South Africans will continue to vote on emotions because they will continue to believe what the ANC or Zuma is feeding them. Now, where did I put my machine gun?

It’s funny how the political spectrum differs so little from the telecoms spectrum in SA.

One big company/party with control over other companies/parties with various tiny token companies/parties creating the illusion of opposition/competition

We are not......just saying like it is and I am not saying in a mean way, but that is the truth and thanks to apartheid it will be like that for a while.

It's the African way. One party will rule until it's overthrown through violence.

Off topic'ish....what do you think of this share scheme only for black people dlk001. Do you think it is fair, and is it not bringing up the past and reverse racism?

Not really. The ANC specifically formed an alliance with COSATU to get the numbers. The only way there will be true multi-party politics in this country is once the ANC/COSATU/SACP alliance is split.

We have a real problem at present,

1. The ANC enjoys the status quo, they do not have to do much bar promise COSATU the alliance is strong and will continue.
2. COSATU will not instruct its members to vote for anyone other than ANC
3. The ANC refuses accountability, and instead opts for non-transparent politicking

We actually in agreement there, that's exactly what I mean. It's totally absurd that the SACP and COSATU back the ANC, except that their leaders have well lined pockets. (The capitalist effectively own the Communist, how ironic)

On the voting issues, I do vote, but I vote for those I consider to most represent my agenda. Unfortunately all of the South Africa parties carry varying degrees of political baggage, which means a lot.

My opinion is that the best Empowerment that any person could ever receive is Education (Schooling) because it opens doors and breaks ceilings.

I'm against BEE because i think its being abused by Black and White people. I have said it on another post.

How can anybody vote with their heart (I did ONCE for very good reason.) But any other time a vote has to be levelled on the evidence on the ground. This government has adequately shown its non-delivery, corruption and incapability (why are these people not replaced?)

Voting should be an intellectual exercise for the strongest opposition or the party that represents the reality of changing conditions, the recent american vote being a case in point. If everybody always voted with their hearts there would never be any change in government.
