Lesbian survives hate crime stabbing

Why is "choosing to be gay" so offensive to gays? Do they feel that it is not a good choice to make?

Because it is not true. I do not appreciate straight people saying I chose to be gay when I know that for me....and many, if not most gay people that is not the case. Also, the "it is a choice" statement goes hand in hand with "you can choose to be straight"....which is also not true.

Because it's not true. I will freely admit that there are some people who have the capacity to choose, but even there you'll notice that there isn't all that much of a choice. Firstly: to have an attraction to both genders, you need to have an attraction to both genders. A gay individual does not. A bisexual individual does. Asexual people have no attraction to gender but to an individual, however even an asexual person might be more inclined toward a certain gender.

A gay person doesn't have a choice about being gay. A bisexual person doesn't have much of a choice about being bisexual and an asexual person doesn't have much choice there either.

Telling gay people that they choose to be gay is insulting, not because being gay is, "Zomg teh evils!" but because it is as ridiculous as saying that a person chose to be black. It's a fallacy, it's illogical and I will be damned if you think I'll let such a stupid statement pass unnoticed.

While some people chose to be gay (I have heard many gay men say "My wife cheated on me so I became gay") I believe for the majority it is simply an emotional and psychological proses that can start from a very young age. Similar to how heterosexual people gain a preference to a specific hair colour or hand full size boobs vs 44HH or skinny vs fuller body.

My dear ufis, what kind of individual do you think bounces between genders? A gay person? No. A straight person? No. Really, the answer lies a bit more in-between the two.

If you have the capacity to be oriented to both genders then you are neither straight nor are you gay. Assuming that you're straight, ask yourself if you could ever have a relationship with someone who is the same gender as you and you'll know how I feel about having a relationship with someone of the opposite gender as me.

Nah,its biological.
Not completely. An argument that rules out all avenues fails regardless of which side you argue for

Certainly there are significant environmental influences in many cases. There are way too many subtle influences on our lives to clearly define them. Choices come into play to some degree, other subtle external influences to another degree ;)

Nonetheless, it is possible to conclude that, given the difference in sexuality in so many sets of identical twins (who are genetically identical), sexual orientation cannot be purely caused by genetics.[9]

And all those studies that demonstrate that we can influence mammals into being gay, lesbian or straight by modifying the amount of hormones they receive during foetal development? All lies?

To argue that there isn't a physiological element at play here is just plain ostrich behaviour.

As is the argument that it is never a choice, I agree. On that note, is there any scientific study + treatments i.r.o changing behaviour should someone decide being gay is not for them (for social reasons e.g.)? If not, why not? Just curious.

I'm sure for some it can be a choice. If you're bi you can decide to be exclusively gay or straight. To go for one gender over the other. You will still find both attractive though because that you have no conscious control over.

To call that nothing but choice is seriously reaching though.

Agree - having said that, if you did decide (despite the fact that as a guy, seeing a chiselled man ass turns you on) that you would prefer to be straight (because you are married to the nicest woman in the world), have doctors come up with treatments that could help you be more attracted to women?

Granted, the picture I portrayed appears more psychological than anything, so perhaps the hardest work would be for the individual? Or would it be 50/50. Of course I'm not likely to get a definite answer on MyBB, but opinions are good to hear.

What next? - Criminals arguing that they hormones made them do it? - yeah right you still have a choice...

Because it is not gay people with the problem...it is society. And yes...experimentation has been done on curing us dirty homo's. The South African Army was one of the organizations that tried this. The Nazis I think did similar experiments as well as trying to change they eye colour of Jews etc. Aversion therapy was a accepted meas of treatment in the dark ages.

I say again...it is not gay people with the problem....it is the homophobes with the problem. Why should we have our orientation changed (even if it was possible) when all that is required on your part is a change in your closed mindedness?

I don't think we're talking about 'doing it' per se. We're talking about what goes on upstairs. Haven't you ever wished you could just throttle someone who disagrees with you on MyBB? :D You didn't do it, but you thought it!

You're not hearing me aunty Oc. I used an example of a man who by choice wanted to change their orientation. Try again, this time with less emotion. ;)

Apologies for my outburst but I get annoyed when people are overly sensitive about their freaking sexual orientation!!!

Did you have a choice as to the colour of your eyes, or whether you had certain features or not?

There is no "choice" involved in being gay or straight, simply, the choice as to whether you are going to be open about it or not.

I'd be too, if I ran the risk of getting stabbed because of it.

If I may answer this one as well....Gay clubs are full of married men who want to stay straight for their wives. Once you are gay or bisexual, you will continue to be so for the rest of your life....you may be able to suppress your feelings for a while, but they will always be there.

No because the effect happens during foetal development and so far we have no medications that can reverse any of that. The closest we have currently is probably gene therapy but in humans it is still very experimental.

Choice is certainly one of the factors. Read my earlier post. If it was all genetic, then identical twins would have the same sexual orientation, and they often don't.

Majority of criminals are men right?? Does it have anything to do with the hormone testostorone maybe??? That still doesn't mean we should excuse their actions...
