Karel Pienaar's quote from MTN actually proved to be CORRECT:
He said Vodacom would launch a commercially viable service by December. In fact, industry insiders know that althouth they went live in December, voice quality was so poor they switched it off and went to data only. General quality was so poor that when a handset switched to 2G, the parameters were skewed so that it wouldn't switch back. It was a nominal launch only, not a commercial launch.
Only those with specialist knowledge of 3G at the time would appreciate that.
For quite a while to come, MTN actual data revenue was higher than Vodacom's, because their approach of beefing up GPRS and EDGE resulted in better user experience and the high penetration of handsets and devices already in the market made it all practical.
Vodacom surged ahead on data market share because they cleverly dropped prices and spent a fortune on advertising - superb marketing coup's.
