Less-than-prophetic quotes in SA tech

How about: "In this regard, we will work closely with Icasa [the Independent Communications Authority of SA] to ensure that the local loop is unbundled by November 2011" - Roy Padayachie

Edit: Of course this will be much funnier by December next year when, inevitably, Telkom still has us all by the short and curlies for Compulsory Phone Line Rental™

For me the best local telecoms/technology quote of 2010 was: "Telkom says MWEB’s decision to unilaterally cut of transit links "is not in the spirit of the Internet community"".

+1

Though the unsustainable claim is quite good, this one takes the cake.

Interesting to note the Department of Communications quotes were in fact not predictions but outright lies.

Over five years later commercial mobile TV has not been launched in South Africa and DVB-H handsets are few and far between

um? I have DSTV on my phone though, 50 bucks i think they taking from me every month.

I was expecting to find that in the article and was a bit surprised not to.

I think MyBB has close ties with Web Africa - have you ever seen negative coverage of Web Africa? I havent...

Didn't the ANC say something ludicrous like rolling out broadband to everybody or something ? that made me rofl.

Otherwise I think Telkom's next Generation network adds, and their "10mbps upgrade" farce.

Don't get me started on the Telkom's "10 mbps upgrade farce". I notice that it has all gone quiet again. They had their little marketing campaign successfully - got everybody talking about them and some customers (like me) upgrading my speed from 384Kbps to 4Mbps, due to the fact that I would be prepared to pay the extra cash for a 10Mbps line. And where am I now? I am paying the extra, but not on 10Mb!!! I wonder how many others did the same? Clever (although fraudulent) marketing Telskum. Come on MYBB - talk to Telkom. Do some digging. Find out what is happening with the promised 10Mb upgrade. If we remain quiet about it now, there is no reason for Telkom to do anything.

How about from Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf SA, saying the HTC Hero upgrade for Android to 2.1 was a week away in June... hahaha
He then said there's a delay cause they dont want users to pay for the data of downloading it (um... cause people are forced to click the "download" button Quinton)
then they end up rolling it out manually anyways and not OTA... 4 months later

Nice Quinton!

More recently the well known British entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar said in 1995 that "next Christmas the iPod will be dead, finished, gone, kaput.”

The media also got it wrong on many occasions.

Yes, even MyBB subconsciously joins the party too :D

Exactmobile

Exactmobile’s Gavin Penkin also questioned Vodacom’s 3G network rollout in 2004, saying that "For the most part, corporates are not using GPRS, so why would they use 3G? There are many users out there with a camera phones, but do they use them to send pictures to people on a daily or weekly basis? How many people out there are buying premium content using GPRS? The market is 18 months away from being ready to use 3G services and, until then, launching a 3G network would just be a waste of money."

You can see why he said that... Back then exactmobile had to pretty much help you set up GPRS on your phone so you'd be able to download their stuff... Let's face it, GPRS sucked. 3G was something you were forced to use to get a mobile connection. Cell C's HPSA+/3.75G is almost as good and for the same price faster than ADSL in this country...
