where I found myself without notice litigating against your wife and daughter,

In other words, by all standard uses of the word, they took you to court? Using an archaic definition helps no one. You erred, accept it and move on.

And as @bwana says, meanings of words is really how they are defined in the dictionary.

Oxford Dictionary

litigation
NOUN

The process of taking legal action.

‘the company wishes to avoid litigation’

More example sentences
‘Recent case law on malpractice litigation and informed consent has been incorporated.’
‘This was all the more important as the case was not one of civil litigation but criminal litigation.’
‘This was a major turning-point in the history of English personal injury litigation.’
‘The uncertainty was adversely affecting the disposal of personal injury litigation.’
‘You may be aware that litigation in the High Court is a very costly business.’

lets say I'm wrong just for arguments sake

I must now retract the email? if you wish to farm for an apology, thats never going to happen, especially since you accused me of lying.

so why are you here?

As it's impossible to retract an email you have no option to that, perhaps if would just acknowledge the error in word usage and file it for the future, when in doubt of the correct usage of a word (especially when your communication might form part of future litigation) lessens your positive impression on those on other side of the argument.

I don't really care about the opinions of those who accuse me of lying.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

saturnz's threads rarely disappoint.

I'm pretty disappointed this thread has been right at that point where it may be interesting for 4 pages but kind of just fizzle's on like a dineo tropical storm over GP.

In all fairness to saturnz it seems he only used the word "litigating" because he felt like he was in a courthouse when he went to meet the tenants as they grilled him and treated him as if he was the "criminal" and "judged" him for his poor role as a landlord.

I'd like to know what the complaint was.

Wonder what the discussion between the husband and the wife was like after the email was read.
