Is this probable that ONLY the ethernet adapter went poof, and the rest of the PC is fine?

Reason I'm asking is that my router (which was connected to my P4 - xbmc) was taken out by lightning. I now have a new router which doesn't work well. And I'm not sure if its the router or the ethernet adapter on the P4 that's the problem.

How would I check this on Xbmc?

In general it will either work or not. I replaced my dad's p4 ethernet this week due to lightning. They are cheap so just go buy one and stop wondering.

His was dead though, had no intermittent issues.

I have some consoles at different locations in the Pilanesberg park. End of last year there was a lightning strike that knocked out the network at Manyane. I could not access the console via logmein after that. They told me that the console was however working fine. I disabled the onboard network 'card' on the motherboard and inserted a new network card into one of the slots. Thereafter was able to control the PC remotely again! So yes it can happen. Just be glad it did not knock out the whole board!

The "worst case scenario" happened to a friend of mine.
Lightning -> telephone line -> router -> ethernet cable -> ethernet port ==> mobo/psu/cpu/ram all went poof.

He was at work so couldn't even do anything when the weather turned bad.

I unplug my PC/Router etc whenever I leave home, just in case! :D
