We have an office of about 30 people, exchange server on premise, data replication (throttled) to another branch, plus that branch (18 people) pulling their emails from exchange, VOIP traffic and then internet access. We started off with a 2mb fibre line and then a year later upgraded to 4mb and then a year later upgraded to 6mb. Voice obviously get priority, but other than that we managed fine. Obviously we would have always wanted more bandwidth but we made do. It never worked on a 4mb ADSL line. It was just too slow. If you can afford it, get the light-speed, otherwise start on the smallest and then upgrade. I'm sure your ISP won't complain about upgrading your line during a contract.

my end goal is actually to raise enough money to get the 100mb uncontended line, I should do it in about two years time, after I've upgraded our own internal LAN to fibre.

Why do you want to upgrade your LAN to fibre?

I could really come up with 20 reasons, but basically our ICT is a result of years of patch work, so everything is a mess, the fibre will simplify the network and futureproof the building to a certain extent.

I had some comms with them a few weeks ago and they claim open access but AFSIK no other ISPs have deals with them to offer data and/or line & data bundles on any fibre they install. They also only offer uncapped and capped is not an option.

Why? They're one of the longest standing ISPs in the country.

I had terrible experience history with them, their site was also non functioning filled with dead links.

Their support was no where.... Just a bit concerned moving our business critical stuff over...

Yes, got word back now that it is open access. I'm sure it's just a matter of time though for other ISPs to come to the table.

Right now we don't really have any other options for fibre, the other options are just way too expensive.

Contract length?

12 or 24 month. Get a discount off the monthly cost on some packages if you take the 24 month contract.

Our building landlord seems interested so I'm hoping we can get enough interest from the tenants. I would really love to tell Telkom that all the people in our building will be cancelling their services with them.

any one using FTTH at the moment ?

I've gone so far to agree with cybersmart to send a tech for a site assessment sometime next week, We are 27 tenants with 3 buildings. and cybersmart really seems amped to install for us, we are around 60 meter away from stand RD in stellenbosch, from what I understand there fibre link runs right past us and won't have any issues bringing it in to the complex.

I would just like to know is there any catch for this FTTH home 20mb fibre uncapped ? anyone have any issues sofar ? how is the performance and after service support ?

I'm now just waiting for go ahead from our building's trustees.

Met with Brian from Cybersmart yesterday, they do seem to be very on top of things. Impressed so far and we haven't even ordered anything yet.

So they provide a fibre line:
http://lightspeed.co.za/order_form.php
10Mbps R499pm Not Needed
20Mbps R899pm Not Needed
50Mbps R1 499pm Not Needed
100Mbps R2 899pm Not Needed

Is this price the minimum they will go? How many others in your street do you need for them to consider you, if they even consider street instead of only apartment complexes? I can pick any ISP on top of this or do they provide an ISP package with it included? What is the installation cost differences per person?

I am in Table View as well, but more in the area of Bayside. Having line issues atm, so considering alternatives.

I don't know about the FTTH offerings, ours is for an office park building.

this price is for fibre rental & uncapped, the install cost depends of your area, normally its R10000 for the area some area's are abit more expensive and they need a commitment of 30 k.

but in the instance of mine its a complex so they will do advertisement etc from what I understand

Commitment of R30k in terms of contracts or installation costs in total?
