Does anyone else feel like since mid-month seacom issue their adsl has not returned to usual speed? On a 4mb adsl line with afrihost and for example when trying to pull a file off box.net i get about 6 - 8kb download and the download times out before its done. plus many sites are seriously slow.... Threshold & throttled prehaps?

Yep same here...With Mweb uncapped, and while the cable was broken I was enjoying speeds unlike I had ever had even before Seacom broke. Now that the cable is fixed again, my internet is once again dragging on like a huge elephant. I can't understand how that is possible. Did the ISP's get more bandwidth from other sources while the cable was broken? And now that it's fixed has this reduced down to their usual level again?

I can't make sense of it, I thought that during the break my speeds would be worse than normal, not BETTER!!!

But anyway, point is, my speeds have not returned to normal at all...

Edit: I see you're new to the forum btw, Welc:)me!!!

Dont worry I think its happening to alot of people... Since either Saturday or Sunday, my speeds have been very bad. I get the same ping rates for local as I do international. all I use my account for local server based games.

Well at least I am not alone then.

Telkom switched my lines at the exchange a few days back because they said there was water damage, so now my phone is clear, but adsl is still seriously slow. On that note was seriously impressed with telkoms service. wow.

I am going to assume throttling at Afrihost. Just tested a standard dsl account at Mweb and at least I was able to pull down a file at about 90kb a sec.

I would love the isp's to tell us how much bandwidth is too much and when they will start throttling your line rather than the "if you are in top 7% of users you will be throttled and bla bla bla" because I have no idea what high real usage is then on uncapped? Any ides???

Yip, that I am, been a reader for awhile and thought it was time to make the leap. thanks :)

Yeah I found Mweb was faster while they routed around the seacom problem, I think it had some thing to do with not having thier shaping setup on the other line.
Its back to normal (which is not very fast) again.

Well, I guess we have to continue doing what we as the consumer do best in the adsl market... be powerless and accept.

Yep, exactly. And considering Tels**m's groundbreaking new deals it seems that the one with all the copper for us is going to keep it that way for a while...

i'm also on afrihost and i'm also experiencing slow connectivity. can anyone explain exactly why though?..

@Dames - Yip, you're right!

Not sure exactly. But I used a mates 3GB Mweb account this morning and the speed was drastiaclly better. Back to Afrihost account - I called them and they say the throttle the top 7% of users to relieve network congestion. So I assume I am in the top 7%, done about 45GB this month so maybe you have too? Although my line has been slow most of the month. Up until this month using uncapped on average got between 300 - 400kb a sec... now lucky if I can get 20kb a sec. I am waiting for the new month and hopefully see speeds return back to normal.

You wonder why Telkom havn't switched totally over to Fibre, it's faster and it has to be way cheaper than copper, because it's basically sand, and especially with all the copper thefts.
Who's going to steal fibre is not easy work with and it certainly can't be melted to be reused like coper.

I think it's probably the contention ratio, condsidering how many people are on broadband now the prices have dropped.

I note that most people posting here are from Cape Town. I'm in JHB and my experince has been similar. Since 9:30am on Saturday, the speeds have been extremely inconsistent. Every evening seems to be a major headache, yet in the early morning (around 6am) the speed is perfect! Last night it was so bad that I lost all connectivity and neither Telkom nor MWEB were able to get to the bottom of it. This morning, everything was perfect again!

ps. While Seacom was down I had no complaints at all.

Server Load and probably poorly configured routers. I mean who in thier right mind is online at 6am?
