Hello all,

Let's say I have a10mbps business ADSL line, which would sync at say, 1000kbps. If I connect 5 of my neighbours via Wi-Fi (WISP setup, with CPE's), and do bandwidth control on there CPE's to say Max. 200kbps, would the network run at okay speeds if nobody runs anything that is bandwidth intensive?

If so, what is the estimated maximum number of users I can run on the same line with same bandwidth control etc?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Not as yet. I have, however, been on contact with the guys at Ellipsis regarding this. I am still in the planning phase, getting all the necessary information before I make any huge expenditure.

Yes. If you are applying "bandwidth control" then you can share the bandwidth equaly to all users and their own usage will not impact on others.

You are assuming that you will get a perfect 10Mbps, which rarely happens. So 4 users will get a nice 2Mbps DL and 0.2Mbps UL speed and the fifth will suffer.

The number of users will depend on your router model and router(s) setup configuration.

My intended deployment is as follows: 12dbi Omni to send out the major Wi-Fi network, and each client using the TP-Link WR8432ND as their CPE. Can you recommend a router to manage the whole network? i.e The one to which the main omni access point connects. I will most likely use the Ubiquiti Bullet M2 in conjunction with the omni for the access point.

For the best user experience you are better off getting a fibre connection of sort. ADSL might not be the best option if you are essentially running a wisp. If the adsl goes down, all of your customers go down. If your exchange is congested, everyone will feel the effect of the congestion.

I don't have any experience running a wisp. This is just thoughts that pop up In my mind when thinking of 5 people on a 10mb adsl line. A 10mb line only runs at 8.5mbps max, so one of your customers won't get 2mbps.

Im just pulling your leg :) May I suggest purchasing a Mikrotik RB750 and putting your DSL router in bridge mode. Let ether1 dial out the PPPoE session. Ether2 can connect to your internal network. The other ports can be used for other things. Ether3 can be used for a LTE router should the DSL link go down.

See with the RB750 controlling your network you can perform QoS and have failover scripts. You can also create a Squid proxy server on a spare box and link it. I highly recommend this.

I also highly recommend each user/client have an external CPE such as a PowerBeam.

I agree with the fibre point, DSL can be emotional. However for a small amount of users it can work.

EDIT: Mikrotik is a good choice.
 
Absolutely. A fibre backbone would be ideal. I may want to start out with the ADSL and hopefully upgrade as more interest arises. Hence, only 10mbps initially. Of course I would LOVE a 100mbps fibre link haha!
 
Mikrotik is the only way you are affordably going to get this working. But it has a steep learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, there is effectively nothing you cannot achieve.

Luckily there are a lot of resources to find your way with Mikrotik. But even with those resources, it is still not easy to get I the swing of things.

W.r.t this, would it be a bad idea to have 8-10 users at 2mbps on the 10mb line? Applying the theory of contention ratio's? I'm looking at maybe rather getting the connection from a WISP and not ADSL.

As long as you don't promise each user a constant 2Mbps...
