Hi,

I'm trying to decide which router to buy, a friend of mine can get me a Linksys WRT54GL at a good price (cheaper than digitalplanet etc) but I have read mixed reviews about it.

Most people rave about it, however, the odd voice says that version 5 of this router has VXWorks as its OS. Some claim that it does not work well out of the box now, that it is slower etc.

I can't decide if there is anything to these claims. I've searched these forums but not found anything about the version 5 claimed to cause the problems. Does anyone on here own a version 5 Linksys WRT54GL (apparently it has a "CGN7" printed on it somewhere)

Perhaps you could let me know if you have had similar issues or if this guy was just smoking his socks :D

Thanks,

Ok, from other forums/reviews I can gather that the GL version is, in fact, the same as the older G model. The GS version is the one that runs VXWorks, and has been on the receiving end of bad reviews.

Interesting note though, apparently they are charging $20 extra for the "old" GL version. Hmmmm.

I realise that I've just answered my own question (isn't that the best way?) but I thought there may be others asking the same thing. So, now you know...

WRT-54G Version 5 runs VxWorks with 8MB or RAM and 2MB of FLASH

WRT-54GL Version 4 hardware running Linux with 16MB of RAM and 4MB of Flash.
