Hi there

Does the WRT54GS do ADSL. According to the website:

...Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection...

A search on the forums brought up a few topics where people had the wtr54g and an additional adsl modem.

If this one doesn't do it, would the WAG54GS (which is advertised as a ADSL modem/router) be a wise choice.

Except for the linksys products, which ADSL modem/router + wifi + ehternet would you guys recomend for under R900

Thanx

The WRT54GS does not 'do' ADSl per se. You need to add a 'broadband' ethernet modem to your setup to get your ADSL connection working. The reason I say 'broadband' modem and not ADSL modem is that if you decide to switch to iBurst or myWireless of WiMax (coming soon hopefully) you could still use the WRT as a router/Wireless AP provided your new broadband service supported ethernet modems using PPPoE.

The WAG54 comes with an ADSL modem built-in, so you're stuck with ADSL broadband.

I prefer the WRT54GS + Modem option. In my case I've just had the modem struck by lightning and I only need to replace that part and not the whole thing. Also the WRT54 runs Linux, so there are lots of free firmware upgrades available (try http://www.dd-wrt.com) that allow to do all sorts of wonderful things with the router (upping your 802.11g transmission power, for example) , whereas the WAG has a custom firmware from Linksys with limited functionality.

Good thing I found this thread... was about to start a new one.

I use my internet for all the usual stuff... browsing and email but I also download quite a bit and game some. Mainly Counterstrike Source and Warcraft TFT.
I also want to go wireless with my internet. I almost bought a Dlink Di-624 but I read reviews and saw a lot of bad ones. I have asked around and I got mixed answers about using wireless for gaming. Apparently wireless connections often drop and recconect every so often.

I was wondering if anyone here has a wireless router that is good for gaming and downloading or knows of one or any general relevant info. Any help would be great.

Thanks
-Daniel

P.S. I saw some good reviews for Linksys routers. Where are you getting yours from 'cause I couldn't find anywhere that sells them.

Go with Linksys WRT54G. Its a very reliable router. Since its a router you just plug in you ADSL Ethernet modem (I recommend D-Link modems) and of you go.

I've been running the above setup for +/- 2 years with no problems. The times my wireless connection dropped I can count on my one hand.

I play World of Warcraft with no problems. I've also LANed a bit with this router (3 people connected) and saw no drastic increase in pings.

Friend of mine recently bought this router since he was tired of struggling with cables. He thanked me for a week!

By the way, dont buy Linksys adapters. Even though the router is excellent, the adapters suck. Get Netgear or D-Link.
