Linux and RAW on a AAO

:o

Have the same problem here - went down to site last week.

Had to stuff the following items in one bag :

- external 80Gb HDD and two 40Gb IDE HDD's for data backups
- 20 holder CD suitcase
- 8 240Mb CD's with utilities on 'em
- external DVD writer (as laptop's dvd rom have packed up)
- laptop
- power supplies and cabling for the lot
- pen and notebooks
- philips screwdriver

amazing that I passed security checkpoint at OR Tambo with that lot in my bag...

This is my assorted gear though I tend to leave one body at work during the week and cart the rest (sans the big lens).

So how is this coming along?
Picasa will open the RAWs without too much of a fuss and the HDD space is really useful for dumping the cards onto.

Apart from that it makes a great little websurfing device.

Cool! Which model do you have? I'm starting to like the idea (althouh I think I'll stick some more memory in my Compaq first and see how that performs).

The Acer Aspire One ZG5.

I'm almost tempted to crack the case and up the ram to 1gb but that voids the warranty so I'm going to hold off on that for a while.

If I had the 13" macbook I wouldnt bother but as you can see it makes a considerable difference for me. :)

I also need to find a decent iPhone flickr app apparently.
You're still using the fedora bundled with the Acer?
Yeah - it seemed to be the best option for my needs and so far everything works. :)

What do linux based photographers use to view RAW (in particular Canon) files? Even if it is only checking out previews?

In addition to what koffie said, if you're just looking for a viewer, try xnview. AFAIK, it also uses dcraw as a backend. Of course, you could also add a virtualbox and run windows in it - that's what I do ;)

Just to get back to this, I've just installed XnView on my Kubuntu machine, using this recipe, and it's better than any Linux default app for RAW files. I'm chuffed as it can read Paintshop Pro layered files too. Only thing is it doesn't pick up the lens used (I've yet to find a Linux app that does).

Even aperture seems to be misreading my sigma lenses. My now 28-300 shows as a Tokina AF193-2 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 and my 150-500 as a Canon EF 135mm f/2L.

Have you tried digiKam ? Haven't read the whole thread as am on holiday but thats what I have been using for my RAW files.

No - I settled on picasa just for a quick preview when I pull the images off the card. For the real work I'll happily 'settle' ;) for OsX and Aperture.

All this flaffing around just served to illustrate to me though just how far Linux is from being ready for mom & pop mainstream use.

*Very* true that, speaking from someone who is spending hours trying to bypass the bugs in Kubuntu 8.10

I might have missed it, but what size more or less will a RAW image be for a 12MP photo?

Depends on the level of compression in the file format.

Mine seems to be 9-12MB.

Sounds like the NEF files have higher compression than the CR2 files. That's about the range I get on the 40D. My 5D samples are between 12 and 14MB.
