Linux grows in recession

hopefully as more people switch to linux, interoperability between platforms will diminish- im still dual booting with xp, but as soon as adobe gets on board and opengl becomes more viable, I can shelve my windows for good

What is the "IDC" referred to in this article?
What is "AFP"??

Is this really a news article, or is it an 'infomercial'? This article, like so many others reported here as "news" is totally contrived.

Come on guys, there are better sources for IT news than this.

IDC is the first result in google.com:

AFP is Associated Foreign Press. An article is not hogwash just because you don't agree with it.

AFP is the Agence France-Presse which should be a pretty clear indicator that MyBB didnt write the article.

adobe reader? opengl? As far as I know it does both. Maybe your concern is DirectX.
Oh and my +70 year old Mom is using SuSE no problem.

Yes it was a waste of time

Get a Gentoo install going and you might learn something.

Help, nope every OS has it's niche, you'll just be a MS guy. No need to panick. Yes you are falling behind.

Oh and it is pronounced Lyn-Ucks. There is an mp3 of Torvalds saying it. Get it right please you jhb people it is not Line-ux.

"Most IT managers say they are planning on increasing Linux use as the recession bites."

That will cost a few bucks for training :D My opinion is still if you can't "speak" at least one programming lanuage then Linux is not the ideal thing. I can do HTML, Assembler, C and C++ and still have a few probs sometimes. What I would love to see is a better emulation like wine that the devs put more time in this.

Real men use LFS ;)

I can do HTML, Assembler,...

You are a real man. I'll buy you a beer at the bar and fight right next to you :D

What arch do you do assembler on? I have done 6502, 680x0, 8055, 8088 & PIC but it was a long time ago.

how do you mean? VMware maybe?

If you don't know what wine is google it and we will talk again :)

@ ponder

Uff allready 2 years back I think it was the Infenion 80xx. I can't really remember but it was a simple build PCB. 4 ADC, 4x8 LEDs and one LC Display.

The pronunciation depends on where you're from and your home language. The man's name is pronounced Line-is in English speaking countries not Lean-oos.

I would like to see this work, but the majority of lusers are so entrenched in Windows and MS Office, and are reluctant to change. Even when it's an improvement. I chose to change to Linux, others have chosen Vista , well, only one other guy, luckily. But, maybe people will begin to see the light, if what the article says works out.

A bit of foot-in-mouth disease happening there.

Companies tend to skimp on training in tough times.

i can vouchf or this. having taken over our IT department a few months ago I was asked to consolidate a lot of machines and to basically get it smaller and more manageable.

so far two ipcop machines have been put in place, for proxy+web filtering+vpn (so that is three other boxes in the bin) and freenas has found a home with us also, as a storage server and internal ftp, using ghost4linux to back up important users machines when necessary.

we are a ms OEM, action pack subscriber and a microsoft gold partner. we do not have to pay for ms licensing, so the cost isnt even an issue.

next will be the exchange server, probably into the nearest bin, as well as the external customer facing web and ftp machine. I've got a few workstations using various builds of linux to see if it is feasible to roll it out to select users instead of our current xp.

ek voel niks.
