Restore all settings to default.

No problems as well with cinnamon and latest updates.

Maybe the updates broke something with the ATI driver then?
 
You should never have to reinstall, in extreme cases you only need to delete the relative config files.
You were a bit hasty with the reinstall otherwise someone here could have told you what to delete to get the system default again.

I could not even get terminal to open. Try and click on the icon and it vanishes. eventually entire task bar goes blank and you have to press power button till it powers down. I ended up doing a new install. I really pisses me off. Oh well. I will just never ever update again I guess.

Ctrl+Alt+T to open the terminal?
