Lion Lager

SAB has to brew Lion once every 2 years in order to retain the license.

I did a brewery tour just over 2 months ago at the Newlands brewery and they told us they were busy brewing it.

Huh, I thought Delta Corporation in Zimbabwe and Kgalagadi Breweries in Botswana produced the Lion Lager which was promoted here within a limited window, much was delivered by the Delta Corporation.

License in SA. I'm guessing those hold the licenses to produce in those countries.

It might not have been SAB's beer that was sold at Makro, but they were brewing a batch when we visited. Anyone got a can from the Makro batch that has details of where it was brewed?

I've got one at home, will check it out tonight.

PnP by my GF had it the other day. I will check later today. Have you checked that bottle store in Eastliegh - they often have stuff other okes don't keep.

Delta Corporation Limited and Kgalagadi Breweries (Pty) Limited are SABMiller plc associate companies.

Your point?

It is still SABMiller plc brewing Lion Lager, but in Zimbabwe and Botswana at their associate companies (breweries). I didn't know that they was brewing Lion Lager at SAB Newlands Brewery and that that it was a prerequisite to brew Lion Lager every two years in SA in order to retain the Lion Lager brew (and package) license.

Well I don't know either, why I'm asking what the can says.

The guide just said they're busy brewing a batch of lion lager when we saw the old Lion Lager signs in the museum, she said they had to do it every 2 years in order to retain the license. I just thought that may be the reason for the "limited supply" at makro.

I think a beer license is country specific, with conditions to retain. So essentially if they didn't do it, Distell for example could take it over and start producing and distributing Lion Lager in SA. Castle and Black Label are obviously SAB's strategy in SA, which is why they squelch Lion.
