List of congested exchanges?

Exchange Name Gordon's Bay
Exchange Code WGDB
is
f@cked

Been f@cked for more than a year now. On and off.

Tracing route to mybroadband.co.za [41.203.21.137]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms BEZEQ [10.0.0.2]
2 1211 ms 1442 ms 1327 ms 41-133-108-1.dsl.mweb.co.za [41.133.108.1]

Im making this official now. I am going to burn that exchange down, so it can be rebuilt.

Holy crap ! 1211 ms through your exchange hehehe... Bellville North is not far from those figures... Once you are done burning down your exchange, please come and burn Bellville north down as well... I will repay in petrol filled cans + cold beers !

More and more people I know are experiencing this same issue on different exchanges/dslams(increased latency at home from 6:30 - 7pm). In my case Telkom is now denying that the exchange is congested. The funny thing is that I am still downloading at the full speed (100kb/s) although my upload does take a hit. I am not sure on how this all works, but could it be that it is only the upload link that is congested?

In any case I am not confident in Telkom fixing this. The exchange might be congested now, but it it probably caused by their 1MB free uncapped promotion. So even if they upgrade the dslam now, in 3 month's time it might no longer be a problem for them and they wont get the ROI? That being said I can't see how any subscriber on my dslam will continue with the product beyond the promotion if you look at the shocking service they are getting presently.

Might have been a better idea to upgrade these dslam's before doing the promotion?

Oh pls be selective when you choose the Bellville north dslam to burn down! The one I am on is fine, however I know for a fact not all of them are :(

I have been hard at work trying to get my problem resolved. Logged more faults. At least my calls don't just get closed anymore, they are now just ignore them. I have also done a escalation. No result. I don't really have any other options at the moment than downgrading to a 1mb line and saving some money. Maybe pop in at the Cape Gate Telkom store and spend some more time on the phone with hellkom.

This is also affecting my downloads and not only my latency anymore.

This will soon start to affect ISP's as well as they will loose business because of this.

I've been in touch with Mweb and Telkom more times than I'd like to count. Success ranges from the standard "I don't know" to simply not responding.

I'm in the Bellville/Durbanville area, and this is driving me crazy.

Hi Guys

I'll just add to the thread by saying that im experienceing the same issues. Super high latencies at off-peak times. My download and upload speeds are not affected but it is impossible to play games like Cod4 and Tf2 on the local servers. A Telkom Techie was sent out late last year (2011) and he couldnt fix the problem. Im on a 384Kb/s line with Telkom ISP btw, in La Roschelle/ Oak Glen area, Bellville.

You know what, just a simple acknowledgement of the problem and a rough estimate on when it will be fixed would have gone a long way. At this stage we dont know when or even IF this problem is going to be solved.

For me its been almost 4 months and counting....

Well, Bellville North 5 was ****ed the last 24 hours, on the dot, very strange, but as of 9pm I could actually connect again, pppoe sessions just didn't work at all, if you were connected, latencies was a sky high 800ms.

Yep, Bellville North is the worst it's been for months. Had latency of 600ms and a d/l speed of 0.04mb on a supposedly 4mb line...
Techie that came to look at the line yesterday told me that he's house is on the Tygervalley exchange and that too is congested, but there's nothing that can be done untill someone in telkom decides to add more bandwidth, sigh.

Isn't there something in the consumer protection act we can use to threaten telkom with, I mean, at least in my case, they are simply not providing a service that I'm currently paying for.

True story:

I got a better ping to South African servers from my hotel room in Uganda than from my home via Bellville North.

edgemead/bothasig screwed again???

I'm at the point where as may as well scrap my phone line and get a 3G dongle since my latency is 600ms and I get 150-300ms on 3G.

Disgraceful of Telkom, though not shocking, not shocking AT ALL.

Agree Bothasig/Edgemead exchange is congested. Have latency problems, and I live in Monte Vista :(
It gets worse at night though, compared to the day from my experience.

Trying to play on EU servers becomes a nightmare at certain times, starting off from a 200-230ms<-(normal and playable) and the jumps to a 600ms + is frustrating.

Eldoraigne Exchange in Centurion, Gauteng must also be congested. Ever since the 10 mbps upgrades the latency and throughput go seriously bad during prime time where you get about 100 KBps on your downloads with pings at about 800 ms on the first hop and at off peak times you 1MBps downloads with pings as low as 11 ms. Before the upgrade all was fine on a 4 mbps line anytime of the day.

I dunno if I'm experiencing the same problem...

I have been playing BF3 on local servers since it came out and have been playing 100's up to around a week before xmas... could play on siax / wage servers, 64 players with no lag at all. (have a 384 line btw)

Now all of a sudden I get these constant lag spikes while playing on the same servers. Nobody else complains about server lag so I can only assume its my exchange :(

I'm on the Lorraine exchange in PE. Can I report to Telkom? Sorry, but I dont have much experience with ADSL

When u experience the lag, close your game and go to pingtest.net and run a pingtest to a local server. Report back here with ur findings. Do a couple of pingtests at different times of the day, but mainly when u experience lag.

Just note that currently virtually all local bf3 64 player servers get laggy as soon as they are full. People just don't complain about it anymore but trust me we all get it. If your pingtests are fine but u are still lagging then try a 32 or 48 player server and see if u still lag.

Yeah, mine just started spiking again, and right in the middle of such an enjoyable TF2 game too.

I've tried contacting my ISP (Mweb) and Telkom, but no dice. Anyone have any idea who we can contact to find a solution to this?
