LIVE | Apartheid flag judgment

They should declare the current flag as hate speech too ... it represents white oppression, grand theft and communism

When the cops start rounding white people up, beating them for not having their ID books, or putting them in their vans and them never returning home, then I'll join you on the bandwagon. Until then, sadly the two are not the same.

You do know that FACTUALLY, more people has died in the "New SA" as opposed to all deaths during apartheid?

Just think about that one for a second ;)

What's with all the outrage here? Do people here actually have a sentimental attachment to the flag or what? I grew up during the 80s and I can understand the argument around why symbols associated with an oppressive system, while maybe not directly problematic, can be problematic by association.

Freedom of speech means nothing unless if you protect that which you find utterly disgusting.

Case in point: Germany and their banning of any Nazi related imagery such as the swastika, which has a long history of not being associated with white supremacists prior to being co-opted by the Nazi party

It is on the basis the ruling is made,

Any gratuitous display of the old flag, demonstrates a clear intention to be hurtful, harmful and incites harm, promotes and incites hatred against black people in terms of the Equality Act, says judge

tomorrow it is the Taalmonument or the Voortrekker monument.

The display of the old flag gratuitously demeans and dehumanises on the basis of their race. It impairs their dignity, says Judge Mojapelo

Ultimately, Afrikaans will be dragged into the court. There is an abundance of articles archived on the internet of Afrikaner culture and traditions being demeaning, dehumanising, hurtful, harmful and inciting.

The judge also said,

Words should not be taken literally, says judge

how many rulings in the Equality court, and by the SAHRC, has been made on the basis of words being taken literally? You can't even use an Afrikaans idiom in this country.

By that reasoning, the German flag must then also be banned.
Its ridiculous.

Maybe you should do more research on that matter. Apartheid records are not accurate.

It isn’t a banning order, it is a prohibition. What are the terms of the prohibition? Prohibition walks a fine line with a ban.

Notice how pitbull didn't say white people. He said people.

Mbeki's anti-western, afro-centric ideas about HIV and AIDS resulted in more deaths than anything the Apartheid government could dream of.

I'm all for freedom of speech. I'm also for people not being a dick. Believe it or not there is a middle ground that most people can agree on.

For example, in this case I would understand the reason behind having the flag on display in a museum. I would not understand flying the flag in your yard so everyone can see it.

Do you think someone should be thrown in prison for flying a flag in their yard?

The answer is no. And throwing people in jail for flying a flag isn't going to get rid of racism.

During most revolutions these symbols are destroyed by the people who were oppressed. You want to remove these historic things from public and put them in a museum then go ahead.

Many coloured people speak Afrikaans so I doubt it.

Some of you guys might need to do a bit more reading. Many people (including the World Bank) have argued that many of South Africa's current problems are caused by an incomplete transition, and I agree that this is part of the problem we have in current SA society. Yes, the ANC messed things up because it was meant to handle that transition, but we're here now and there are issues that need to be addressed.

Would like to know what you call this?

Hypothetically speaking, if you owned a property in Seapoint in Cape Town (which is predominantly Jewish in case you don't know), would you fly a Nazi flag there?

It's not about getting rid of racism. It's about discouraging public displays of symbols associated with it.

Ja man, what a bunch of pussies. What whites are experiencing now is Oppression Lite™. They should keep quiet until it's as you describe.
