Living with a Toxic Parent?

Read the list, then thought who the frik would still live with a toxic parent, other than toxic bunny.

To answer shortly, I have one toxic parent (80% of the family doesn't speak to him anymore as he's simply a toxic person for whoever is aroung) but I don't live with him and barely ever did.

It's still a pain even with distance though...

life is a bitch. just got to roll with it unfortunately.

Apparently mine are toxic

4. They Make Toxic “Jokes” About You

They still joke about the time I threw a tantrum in the mall because I thought the presents under the Christmas tree were for me or the time I swallowed a 20 cent coin.

There's no school for parenthood. Most do their best.
Parenting is far too important to be taught in a classroom. It's taught in life. Which is why the best school is growing up in an intact family where both parents love one another irrevocably, always seeking what is best for one another and their children. Their parents model good parenting for them. It is one of the greatest tragedies of our time that this is less and less the norm.

As someone who grew up in a nuclear family unit, it's shocking how difficult it is to find dating partners who do not have major hangups about their broken household.

Very, very sad this. It's not their fault, of course - they're victims of their parents. But if we don't break the cycle, it travels down the generations spreading pain. My heart breaks for all those involved.

Parents hand down ways of thinking that may have been going for generations, not easy breaking the cycle especially if it's dysfunctional stuff. Also if you change prepare to be ostracised in some form.

My SO escaped a toxic parent. We still visit on big days though and it is inevitably a disaster. It is terrible to see someone you love hurt by the people who should love them unconditionally.

The solution for "Big Day" situations are to isolate those "Big Days".

Draw attention away from where you want to be.

You're also gay and gay folks often don't have great family backgrounds. Arthur probably has a word or two to say about that. ;)

My question comes yet again from a very deep and dark place. as some of you may know my husband passed away when I was 7 months pregnant. But now when I needed my mom the most at a hospital visit and the doctor was waiting for the heart specialist to see my little one and I asked my mom to stay there for me, her response was clear. It was more important for her to go home and cook my dad a meal than be there for me when I needed her.

Things like she needs to know my salary so she can plan her month around me. She refuses to let me see my friends. When me and little one go sleep over at friends I go home to emotional abuse because how could I. She would use little one against me. I am not allowed time off. Even though I try and break away a little bit it causes more trouble than going for a night out. And oh yes. How could I not help her clean the kitchen at 5 ****ing am...

I find it horrific even remotely that my little one has to grow up in this environment..

This is not how things were supposed to be...
