Load shedding network warning: Telkom

Load shedding did f-all for Panaroma Exchange congestion yesterday. Couldn't even get 600kb/s though my line - was impossible to watch the F1 at 22:00 last night.

Telkom load shedding network warning

Telkom has warned that its services will be affected by Eskom’s load shedding schedule

Telkom said that in an instance of power failure — as a result of load shedding or otherwise — older models of modems do not have built in functionality which allows the modem to reset itself.

In these cases customers are required to reset the modem manually once power has returned by switching it off and on again, and possibly rebooting their computer.

So once the modem, which has been off, comes back on, I must turn it off and on again to reset it?!?! :wtf:

nice.... received load shedding schedules for pretoria just now... so what Telkom is saying is, you can be affected by load shedding in your area for 2-4hours a shot, so no power and thus no internet for u, and then, it could happen that load shedding may move to a different area, and your exchange affected, thus also no internet.... thanx Eskom.
of course i dont suppose we can claim for 'loss of internet' service? (for electricity you pay for usage, but internet access is paid for, whether u get to to use it or not) :)

So in summary:

Telkom = Poked - thanks to Eskom
Eskom = Poked - due to zero planning by our post-apartheid government
Post Office = Poked - On the brink of collapse due to strikes
SABC = Poked - due to leadership with zero qualifications
Rand Water - Poked - due to poor planning

Otherwise our elected government is doing quite fine ........

Forgetting about sanral

Someone needs to tell Telkom about UPS`s and redundancy planning.

But there's no more load shedding for now?
for now.... maybe not expressly planned, but possible... latest load shedding schedule dated 1 Nov, so somebody made provisions :)
you know, they can actually EMPLOY somebody (a few guys in fact) to go around switching off streetlamps in the morning and back on at nite, instead of the lights burning all day in the sun.
that way gov can take a stab at both unemployment, and save a crapload of electricity at the same time :D
too high level thinking and management ?...

So that's why the ADSL network was totally unusable after 21:00 last night... left it at that, no use in getting frustrated...

They have those but you can't exactly plan for all situations, like complete lack of power from eskom. They run exchanges on DC power with generators to keep the batteries charged. Occasionally a genny might not start up or it might fail which happens. Remote equipment (ie boxes with kit on your street corners etc only have batteries and if the outage is too long the batteries will run flat, not practical to install a genny here.

I've never heard of a modem that needs to be manually reset after a power failure. That is completely ridiculous. The power failure itself resets the modem.

Ah, so that's why my feed just broke up completely. I also gave up before lap 5.

If only Cape Town residents didn't need to suffer for the fsckups in ANC run Gauteng municipalities

Why is our power being cut?

hehehe... thats whats left of Telkom's skill set. the 'skilled' employees-shedding has already begun ;)
they need to shave some off the top too, especially the useless bunch who only live for the fat salaries & bonusses, without giving proper management guidance to steer Telkom in the right direction towards good business, and advancement for us clients too
